A quick check at http://www.longshoreshippingnews.com/ reveals all manner of things that are currently looming over the US East coast preventing our books being in our grubby hands. There are possible strikes in LA's port, work stoppages looming in Portland, a labour dispute covering all US West coast ports.
Just because these things aren't on the Nine o'clock News doesn't mean smooth sailing for material being transported thousands of miles across the Pacific.
just to cheer you up I got a quote from CNN concerning shipping container losses; "Some estimates suggest that up to 10,000 containers fall into the ocean every year. The World Shipping Council, whose members represent 90% of the world's container ship capacity, say that figure is grossly exaggerated and estimate that on average no more than 350 containers are lost annually." The plastic ducks lost in the central Pacific in January 1992 are still turning up so a lucky castaway may some time in the future be the recipient of a bath toy or maybe even a copy of The Darkening of Mirkwood.
