This isn't game-related, but I was looking for recommendations for an illustrated edition The Hobbit for my 8 year old nephew. Anybody have a favorite in terms of both illustrations and binding quality?

Personally, I'd buy him this first: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hobbit-Graphic- ... the+hobbit

It may not be the novel but, as far as I remember, it has plenty of text with whole sections lifted from the book and the art is, mostly, very nice.

Then, if he likes that, go for the novel. Personally I'd get him this one: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Hobbit-70th-Ann ... the+hobbit

If you're going to be reading it to/with him, I'd look for the Rankin & Bass illustrations, myself. But that's because they're taken from the 1976 Rankin-Bass animated movie. It's a large hardcover - about 12x12x1"...

I was given this edition when I was in high school, and twenty-plus years later, it still has prominent place on my shelf.

The Hobbit, illustrated by Michael Hague (1984)

I think it's a great edition to start reading to a child, and one they will want to read as they get older. You can find hardcover and softcover versions for less than US$20 used.

Thanks for the suggestions! Looks like good material.

Although he's only 8, his reading is pretty advanced (he's reading the hardbound D&D books without much trouble) so I think he can handle the full text. But maybe that graphic novel looks cool.

Get him the novel, get yourself the graphic novel...

The graphic novel is great, I read it with my two-year-old. I also recently discovered this one and I'm loco for the art:

I picked up the comcs adaptation of The Hobbit when it was still being serialized by Eclipse Comcis. I have the collected graphic novel both in trade paperback and in a hardcover edition published by Eclipse Books that I found in my friendly local comic shop.
