Elfcrusher's Journey app

Post by Hermes Serpent » Thu Jul 10, 2014 1:06 pm

I've been using the app to calculate some travelling close to Dale to write some short adventures such as I posited in the thread about the revised Fatigue and Travel rules. Although there is an option for riding there is not one for travelling by boats. Now it's perhaps less important when travelling from Esgaroth up the Forest River but for adventures along the Anduin that might use the River People's barges or other vessels or even down the Celduin towards Dorwinion it might be helpful.

A check box for boats and an alteration to the algorithm to use water travel rather than riding or walking when close to a river would be an excellent addition.

That's been on the "to do" list for a while. The reason I've been procrastinating is that journeys are unlikely to be all by boat. So then I thought, "Maybe I'll flag every hex that contains water, with direction that it's flowing, so that there's just one checkbox...".

Which is why I've been procrastinating.

But maybe I'm overthinking it and LMs are smart enough to just compute journeys in sections.

I know I probably sound incredibly stupid, but how do you use this app? I used Inkscape to transform the pdf of the LM's map into a png, and then MS Paint to transform the png into a jpg. I then uploaded the image. However, I can't seem to make the app calculate journeys. I can click on a hex, and it is highlighted, but when I click on a second hex, the first hex unhighlights and the new hex highlights, and no calculations are performed. I've tried this on Firefox, Internet Explorer, and Chrome. (Chrome and IE have no extensions, FF has NoScript, but I turned it off for the app's site). Any ideas? Thanks!

Shift-click is your friend.

I don't think you had to convert from .png to .jpg...it should be able to handle either.

If you have more problems getting it to work just PM me.

I just read the end of the discussion titled Journeyometer2 Is Now Live! (viewtopic.php?f=7&t=1770&start=150). In this, Elfcrusher said:
Ok, latest version is live. Try it now with your JPGs that weren't scaling correctly before. And if you don't like the scale (too big or too small) try re-converting the PDF to whatever scale you like. As long as you're using the official maps and not changing the aspect ratio it should work now.

A few other bug fixes and UI improvements, too.
I'm assuming that you mean the original map pdfs? I can use the app, but the hexes are slightly off. (I'm not sure how to embedd an image or I would show you a screen shot). I assume that it is because I have the revised rules, so my map pdfs have a different aspect ratio than the originals. For reference, when I export the pdfs as an image (using Inkscape), the resulting png has dimensions: 1552x978. In the other thread, you said that the image should be 1700 * 2125 (I understand that the exact dimensions don't matter anymore, but the ratio might). My ratio is 978/1552=0.63. The ratio that you quoted is 2125/1700=1.25 (Again, I don't know if you calculate the ratio this way, or invert the fraction, but the resulting difference should still be evident). Is my suspicion correct, and the app doesn't handle the new dimension ratio properly, or is there something else going on? If someone explains to me how to embed an image from my harddrive, then I'll upload an image of what the app looks like on my computer.

You know, I never checked to see of the revised edition had the same maps. I will check it out tomorrow and post here. Thanks for the bug report.

Ok, fixed. Please check it out and tell me if it works. I may not have the hexes perfectly aligned, but it should be functional.

My code just got even messier in order to accommodate that change.

That seems to have fixed it up! Thanks so much! Out of curiosity, which version of the Journey rules do you use to calculate the rolls? Also, how do you determine blighted areas? I noticed that when I put in the journey for the Marsh Bell campaign, the app wants the players to make 6 corruption checks. How did it arrive at that? The rulebook states that 'The part of the Long Marshes that is inside Mirkwood counts as blighted, requiring 1 corruption test a day'. This would imply 4-5 corruption tests. Just curious, I can more easily determine blighted places myself if need be. Once again, thanks for an awesome app, and for making that adjustment! I'm sorry that it made your code even more messy. :( As a programmer, I understand how that can go.
