I share your overall enthusiasm, but I'll defend PJ here. As I mentioned in another thread, I was thrilled that he included Galadriel's enigmatic refusal of the ring:
“I pass the test,’ she said. ‘I will diminish, and go into the West, and remain Galadriel.”
It's one of the most important "historical" references in LotR, and it wouldn't make any sense at all to anybody whose only exposure to Tolkien was the movies, and yet PJ included it anyway. My hat is off to him for that.

Hmmm, it's also in the Bakshi cartoon so not sure why he should be singled out but then I really don't like the films so I'm probably biased.
