Oh, neat....you turned the remains of the bridge into a kind of defensible keep, with a natural moat. Very cool. This needs some artwork!

I see. There is much of Unfinished Tales that I haven't looked back at for years. I had completely forgotten any mention of a bridge at Tharbad. Good for you for taking advantage of it! Southern Eriador does become more dangerous near the end of the Third Age, but you are right that there are not many overt threats. Gondor doesn't seem to have a strong naval presence; it would probably be simple for the Corsairs of Umbar to slip Southron agents around the Cape of Andrast into Eriador. Such agents could infiltrate Tharbad, but I doubt that a large body of troops could be fielded without attracting unwanted notice. Other spies might have been operating there for years--even decades.
I imagine your Tharbad Bridge community to be ruled firmly, but not necessarily fairly. Is that a fair guess?

If you go to this page,

The second illustration down is what I am basing my version of Tharbad on.
Hi Otaku-sempai,

You are correct. The Governor rules. There are no committees, no whining, and no complaining. The Governor, supported by his company of men-at-arms (24 men) and troop of cavalry (12 men), protects the town and in return the people pay tax and obey. He can be harsh, but he has kept them safe for decades when everyone around them died. The governor is not a monster, he does what needs to be done (in his mind). Justice is swift and merciless.
However, he has managed to stockpile enough food to carry the entire town for 12 months, enough to live on in the event of a siege, famine or long, harsh winter. And, he does allow the men to own weapons (axes, swords, bows) and carry them when they are away from the safety of the bridge. The town has a militia, led by the most successful men in the town, who have benefitted the most from the governor's rule.
So, for the people of Tharbad...it is a case of "the devil you know".

I use the setting as written, having no need to change anything that is so good as they way it is. I don't delve into Silmarillion (reading it once is more than enough, and I really don't want to put my self through that again
).
That said, as a Loremaster, many of my descriptions I use is influenced by both The One Ring's excellent artwork and the movies, of which I am a huge fan. But I keep to the source material and the Darkening of Mirkwood campaign.

Hello, Sageryne. Did you ever finish your write up for Tharbad? I would
greatly appreciate a chance to read it.

I'm afraid that you actually replied to one of Rich H's posts, not to sageryne's. I'm not sure that sageryne would see it to respond anyway; he doesn't seem to have been active here for over two years.

The quote I copied contained both Sageryne's initial post and Rich. H's response which I was also agreeing with.
Yeah, the chances are quite slim that he would reply, but I thought it was better to give it a shot than not.

What I think Otaku-sempai meant is that it will be Rich that gets a notification that someone quoted him. Not Sageryne. And it's Sageryne you want, so you should have quoted him instead of Rich.

Gotcha, Thanks for the clear up. I'll send a PM and hope for the best.

I must have rolled a "G" rune as I was able to make contact with Sageryne.
