I'm reading Rivendell and trying to picture the regions based on their descriptions. For the Trollshaws I thought "New Hampshire with fewer summer camps". For the Ettenmoors I thought "Scottish highlands with Seattle weather."

An interesting/fun/useful project would be to gather images from around the web, sorted by regions they resemble.

Nothing says "danger" like the New Hampshire rural suburbs....

"Live Free or Die" could be the Ranger motto, no?

P.S. Good thing the old Ettin on Cannon Mountain finally fell down.

I do this already for my campaign, I have a number of images I use for Harad and for Umbar.

Anyone know how I can post images on this so I can show you??

You need to reference the full website address they can be found at using the "[img]<insert%20link%20here>[/img]" command without the quotation marks.

For images that you have stored on your PC you'll need to upload them somewhere first.

Look at the location, westernmost edge of a landmass facing a large ocean with prevailing westerlies, high latitude 57 degrees N, Seattle 47 degrees N so the Highlands are a lot colder and darker by comparison. Seattle annual rainfall 37 inches, Scottish Highlands 180 inches.

Yeah I don't know why Seattle gets so much bragging rights about their QQ rain, Hermes. We get more frekkin' rain and snow here in Albany/upstate NY than they do. You don't see us crying about rain. (We do cry incessantly about the snow and taxes, though).

Lies. I spent a week driving around Scotland (late September 2011) and it was sunny every day. The whole "bad weather in Scotland" thing is just another example of odd British humor.

(By the way, I think the deal with Seattle is not the total amount of rain but the fact that the sun never quite comes out. That said, I didn't realize the rainfall was so little.)

Seattle has the most cloudy days in the US. (226 days per year, on average) - and it's got 140 days of rain per year. Albeit 100 of those are an annoying gray drizzle... just enough to need the wipers, not enough to keep the wipers from squeaking.
