All-Hobbit Companies

Post by warlic888 » Wed Aug 20, 2014 4:02 pm

So, my last campaign group fell through, and my current one is wondering if playing a whole company of Hobbits is possible. We have toyed with the idea of "Cousins in the Anduin" i.e: friendship between The Shire and The Gladden. If such a company was possible, what adventuring motivations could there be? What drives the protagonists? Any ideas, anyone?

A group of young hobbits, inspired by the fantastic tales of the eccentric Mr. Baggins, decides to forgo respectability and embark on their own adventure. One particular young hobbit, an amateur historian, is very interested in visiting the banks of the Anduin to look for any evidence of the hobbits ancient dwellings, perhaps even finding some of his distant kin still living an those distant unknown lands. Of course there is always the chance that a barrel or 2 of Old Toby or Southern Star might sell for a sizable profit in the markets of Dale or Esgaroth. Who knows? Maybe an enterprising young hobbit could make his fortune should he be able to establish a regular trade route. As many Dwarves from the Blue mountains as are passing through the Shire these days, it should be easy enough to join a caravan.

You mean like, say, four hobbits striking out into the wild on a quest? Nah, could never happen.

Now this brings up a question about Bree hobbits. They always struck me as more adventurous and less "respectable" than their shire cousins, living on the frontier so to speak. I can see Shirefolk being less inclined to adventures than Bree hobbits, although I don't think 4 hobbits adventuring is anymore problematic than a solitary hobbit. In fact I think it far more likely for hobbit-folk to travel in groups. (Frodo literally tried and failed more than once to go it alone, but his companions wouldn't hear such nonsense.) That being said, hobbits living in Bree would be much more accustom to travelers heading east and possibly more likely to follow in their wake.

Thanks for the ideas, Weather and Stormcrow. I like the idea about a trade route- possibly connected to the Inn form Of Leaves and Stewed Hobbit? I can't recall the name. The Westerly Inn? Maybe? I don't know. Thanks, guys!

That would be a lot of Fellowship Points!
Recreatividad is my blog in spanish, I write about roleplaying games, specially The One Ring, Mouse Guard, Diaspora and Prince Valiant. You can find custom characters sheets there.

Which would be quite suitable.
