“The Helm of Peace”
Summer 2951

N’Rae, Malaric, Togo, Falandor, and Me’lereal travel from the Easterly Inn to the Black Tarn, then to Sunstead in the East Bight, where they meet Ceawin the Generous. They agree to escort a Dwarf-forged helm from Esgaroth, a gift to honor the dead currently haunting his people. After raiding an ancient barrow and killing the Wood-wight within, the party journeys to Lake-town. A month later, as they return down the Running River with the steel helmet, they realize they are being watched by a raven. Outlaws, led by warriors Beldir and Valdis, attack in an effort to get the artifact, but are swiftly defeated; Valdis flees into the woods. After arriving back in Sunstead, Ceawin and the adventurers enter another tomb between the roots of an oak tree. Another Wood-wight attempts to crown Ceawin with the helm, but Togo distracts it with his magical flute and the others quickly destroy the monster. The barrow collapses on top of them, but they are able to rescue Ceawin and grab some treasure as they escape.

Tonight I finally updated a map I've been using, to show our group where they've gone across Wilderland in our campaign so far.

“The Crossings of Celduin”
Winter 2951

Falandor, Togo, Me’lereal, N’Rae, and Malaric meet Frain in Dale as the city readies itself for the second Gathering of Five Armies. They stay with Dag as the town is overflowing with visitors from across the land. A week later at twilight an elaborate opening ceremony is capped off by fireworks from the wandering wizard Gandalf. Afterwards the Grey Pilgrim seeks the adventurers out, asks them of their recent activities, and tells them of his encounter in Dol Guldur with King Thrain’s tormenter, a spirit known as the Gibbet King. Togo plays music during a masked ball, and the wealthy merchant Lockmand announces that he will bestow a prize to the winner of a great contest. The next day Togo bests the legendary archer, Elf-maid Galia, in an archery event, Frain defeats the Beorning mercenary Gerold in a contest of strength, and Me’lereal and N’Rae participate in a horse riding competition. Then Malaric, Falandor, Me’lereal, N’Rae, and Frain enter the grand melee, a mock battle with wooden weapons to determine the greatest warrior. After an hour of heavy fighting it is down to four groups: three of the fellowship, Gerold, first Captain of Dale Elstan, and a company of Dwarves from the Lonely Mountain. They overcome Elstan and his followers, then overwhelm Gerold. An exhausted Falandor bows out and Frain defers, making Malaric the final victor! Malaric is carried through the streets of Dale to a feast hall, where he and the other winners are seated at the high table. Jester Harrod, disguised by wearing Lockmand’s mask (and feigning to have lost his voice), hands purses of gold to the champions, but when he flings the contents of the final chest into the crowd, he hurls poisonous serpents instead of gold coins! Malaric is bitten, but the heroes swiftly kill and corral the snakes. The gathered warriors stumble and collapse, the wine for the event having been poisoned. Rare herbs are found and N’Rae heals Malaric, but very few warriors are able to be restored. The next morning Dale is afire with wild rumor. A raven arrives and warns all that a terrible army of Orcs and Wolves speeds their way from the south. King Bard invites the party to a council, where Falandor points out a tiny bridge far to the south, a likely river crossing for the enemy. They agree to attempt to hold it for as long as they can, to give Bard time to rally his forces. He gives them horses, and they race south across open countryside. They alert some herdsmen, are spied on by a flock of crows, and ambush and wipe out a band of Orcs and Wolves. They reach the small town of Celduin, where they convince the stubborn Master, Erik, to accept their aid. Over the next two days the adventurers repair the rusted gate, set up defences, and prepare the community for the coming battle.

I made some minor edits, noting how Malaric was bitten by one of the snakes and healed by N'Rae (which I'd forgotten to note in my initial post).

On Saturday we finished "Crossings":

Scouts reveal that the opposing forces are coming in three separate waves. As evening falls, the companions valiantly hold the town’s bridge as they and the locals defeat a group of Orcs riding Wargs. Four hours later they slay a Hill Troll from Mordor as Goblin archers fire burning arrows into the settlement. Things look bleak the next day, and an arriving raven is shot down. Me’lereal recovers a message from Bard asking them to hold the river through the night; the bird also gives a warning before it dies. After one of the townspeople dies, the Gibbet King speaks through the corpse, threatening the Free Peoples. Malaric and Me’lereal resist its baleful influence and burn the body. That night the group again blocks the bridge as a massive army attacks. They fight their way through endless waves of Orcs and hack apart a skeleton in a cart, the host body of the Gibbet King. Terrified by the loss of their master, the Orc-host retreats to the south bank. King Bard, along with warriors from Dale, archers from Lake-town, and Dwarves from the Mountain and Iron Hills, reaches Celduin in the morning. They cross the bridge and crush the enemy, winning a glorious victory!

“The Watch on the Heath”
Winter 2951

Joined by the Wolf-Bride, the group returns to Dale. A few days later the Dwarf Ori asks them to speak with King Dáin. Me’lereal, Falandor, Frain, the Wolf-Bride, Malaric, and Sigmund travel to Erebor, where in the Chamber of Mazarbul they meet with the King under the Mountain and sage Munin. They exchange news, and Dáin and Munin tell of a watchtower in the Grey Mountains, as well as how the merchant Lockmand likely stole a map page from a book about it. Dáin asks them to search the fortification for clues and lends them the ancient metal-bound book. The next morning the party departs north, crossing the trackless wilderness while studying the tome and learning many secrets about the watchtower. Deep in the Waste they meet a strange tree-like creature who calls herself Witherfinger. She tells them about Orcs going north towards the mountains while carrying a heavy chain, and also warns about deadly Snow-Trolls. In a deep, shadowy gorge in the foothills the company are attacked four times by individual Snow-Trolls. Each time they swiftly kill the dangerous beasts, and in a couple of their caves they find hordes of treasure. As they approach the watchtower atop the peak of Zirakinbar, a shade of the old Master of Lake-town warns them of a coming danger chained by an iron trap, and points to an incoming plume of dust coming from the Withered Heath!
