Suggested music
Re: Suggested music
I've found that video game music makes awesome background music for tabletop. The music is specifically designed to set an epic fantasy feeling that we're used to from games/movies/TV, but also not to be too distracting from what's actually happening.
I use primarily World of Warcraft, with a little bit of GuildWars for flavor. I'm not talking about the official soundtracks, but rather the in game music. WoW's music is the easiest to get, as the game can be freely downloaded and a simple MPQ extractor works to pull the MP3 files out. Because both WoW and GW use real orchestras for their music, the quality is wonderful. I've extracted the MP3s and then sorted them into categories for my own use (Dale, Woodland Hall, Elven, brooding, etc).
For landscape sounds, a quick youtube search will provide you with nice long audio clips in a variety of settings. Need a running river? How about a thunder storm? Just do a quick search for nature sounds. For instance, here's a clip of forest sounds that's 10 hours long (longer than any gaming session I ever expect to play in a single sitting) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OdIJ2x3nxzQ. What you would do is use YTD http://www.ytddownloader.com/ and then convert the video to MP3 using AnyVideoConverter http://www.any-video-converter.com/prod ... ideo_free/.
Finally, a quick plug for Syrinscape http://syrinscape.com/. If you don't mind spending a little cash, this is a great tool, and a one stop shop for a variety of RPG settings.

Re: Suggested music
If you are running a relatively light-hearted game, I suggest using bits from the soundtrack to Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
"Far, far below the deepest delvings of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he."

I always provide halved coconuts for my players now that they've acquired mounts.

Re: Suggested music
This link was the best news I've had today, really useful Music/sound and easy to make playlists and change on the go. Normally I construct playlists with Music, but I am more and more thinking about going over to ambient with music playing only at special occasions. Right now I'm rediscovering the excellent soundtrack to Age of Conan. The Cimmerian tracks works well for Wilderland, and the Aquiloians for Dale or more civilised nations like Gondor. Planning to use this when the company arrives at Mountain Hall for the first time in A Darkness in the marshes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=naA1d-w ... _R&index=5shipwreck wrote:More seriously, though, a friend found this website and it just great: http://tabletopaudio.com

I made a spotify playlist. I don't know if it will work for anyone else, but I spent hours compiling modern, minimalist music that I think captures the loss of magic, majesty and sense of weary sadness I want certain parts of Middle-earth to convey for a modern listener.

Re: Suggested music
First post - I haven't LM'ed TOR yet (but hope to sometime) nor DM'ed an RPG for a long time.
However around the time that the LotR movies were coming out, I came across a delightful MIddle Earth-themed harp CD which I often play and intend to use some tracks as background music for TOR.
'Travels in Middle Earth' by Asni of New Zealand - an independent musician and artist who has weaved traditional, classical and some original music with sounds from nature. A few tracks are from the LotR movie soundtracks and so will sound familiar. A real mixture of styles - Elvish Hymn and Dwarvish Blues, anyone?
Some reviews here: http://music.asni.net/travelguide/reviews_travelsme.php
CD snippets plus ordering here: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/asnitheharper - have a listen.
And I don't know Asni - just came across her through harping connections (a fellow player but way below her abilities!)

Re: Suggested music
I just stumbled across the Tabletop Audio website and it has some excellent ambient sounds. I liked the Blacksmith's Shoppe, Goblins Cave, Alchemists Lab, Medieval Town, Cathedral, Mountain Pass and Woodland Campsite.
Re: Suggested music
Also not music but I like putting these kind of atmospheric stuff for journeys.

Of Finarfin's children I am the last. But my heart is still proud. What wrong did the golden house of Finarfin do that I should ask the pardon of the Valar, or be content with an isle in the sea whose native land was Aman the Blessed? Here I am mightier.

That's the second mention of Tabletop Audio I've heard/read recently, and it looks intriguing. I want to try it out soon.Kurt wrote:I just stumbled across the Tabletop Audio website and it has some excellent ambient sounds. Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).
