Multiple knockbacks?

Post by Dunkelbrink » Sat Aug 30, 2014 9:30 pm

Would be interesting to see the forum's opinion on this situation that occurred last session when one of the players was hit but two extraordinary attacks in a row: according to the rules a character can choose to be knock backed in order to halve the Endurance damage from an attack (revised rulebook p 177). He then spends the next round recovering and cannot change stance or take any action beyond recovering his fighting position. But what if he is attacked twice in a round, and chooses to be knocked back on the first? Can he choose to be knocked back also on the second one (the penalty of "recovering position" only having effect the next round according to the text)? Or should the line "If an adversary attacks while a hero is recovering from knockback, the attack is resolved normally" be read that it's only possible to be "Knocked back" once until you've recovered? How have you read it?

I think it means that he can't be knocked back twice. It could also be a bit weird if groups had a dedicated punching bag for this :-)

But another player can also use defend and let himself be knocked back. I think knock back is best used when that stone troll hits you for 30+ endurance.

I tried a combat encounter in the one ring today with some of my players and they found the rally task to be quite good.

We also noticed that armor is really heavy. I told the dwarf player that he could pick any armor he wanted, but he ended up not picking more than a mail shirt because of the encumbrance. We all agreed it was fun, but also that you need to play a bit more before everything makes sense. But the combat system is great. Fantastic how monsters die after one wound (well most of them), and how you can rally to regain what can be considered hit points.

I'd read it as 'you can't get the benefit from being knocked back for free - you have to be able to fight in order to be knocked back, so you can't be knocked back twice in a row.'

That said, I might offer the player the option of being knocked entirely out of a scene with a second knock back. "The troll hits you, then hits you again, and you fall over the cliff's edge and into the rushing river below. You're separated from the rest of the fellowship."
