If you're in combat with the thrall, and you get a good hit on him and it kills the thief outright, then no Shadow. If the thrall is unconscious on the ground and you kill him, then there is Shadow.

When the heroes are fighting Men, I tend to make sure that they go unconscious. When they're fighting orcs or other nasties than zero endurance usually means outright dead.

Even if you play that zero endurance = dead (for adversaries), you might end up with a situation where some of the thieves surrender, or leave the loot and flee. I think those are the sorts of situations where killing them could result in Shadow.

Maybe it's too late, but perhaps that bit of the adventure could be edited for clarity. "Heroes should not get Shadow points for killing the thieves if they attempted to avoid bloodshed."

Not too late... Saturday is my drop dead date. Excellent suggestion, thank you.

Ok, how about: "Heroes should only gain Shadow points for killing the thieves if they fail to make sincere attempts to avoid doing so. The LM may consider ruling that thieves at zero endurance are unconscious but alive; doing so may introduce both a moral dilemma and unexpected plot twists." (It certainly did in our case...)

Alright, breaking internet silence to say that I'm feeling significantly less stressed, as I've hit a major milestone:

Thanks to everyone who helped out at the last minute, in order to proofread the 'final' version. I'm going to do some more last-minute prep work and then I'm going to get on a big jet airplane tomorrow...

Congratulations for taking such a great work to its final goal!
Not easy to keep the work going on in one (or two) projects for a long time.

Looks amazing!
Of Finarfin's children I am the last. But my heart is still proud. What wrong did the golden house of Finarfin do that I should ask the pardon of the Valar, or be content with an isle in the sea whose native land was Aman the Blessed? Here I am mightier.
