Over on Brennor's RPG Corner we have dozens of PBP games running, some of them have been going on 10+ years with the same group of friends now. The key is good people playing a game and knowing they are playing a game. Sometimes people go on vacation, some times the GM screws up a rule or something, but in the end its just friends playing. That's what has made our site so much fun for me over the years. We have tried dozens of systems and settings, and some games run differently than others based on GM, players, but also on the rules and the very setting. We have a Game of Thrones game that at one point at 20 players in it, with half a dozen political threads weaving in and out of one another, awesome! Then we have a Pathfinder AP with 4 players grinding through a dungeon and hacking and slashing from start to finish, awesome!

Some systems suck for PbP, if they are to reactive, require too many pauses between GM and Player reactions. TOR is almost on the edge there, with the Hope mechanic but we make it work. We use half a dozen spoiler tags too, [Roll] [OOC] [Map] [GM] and stuff like that. So players are posting their characters actions or desired actions, the GM posts the IC result, and drops a small [Roll] spoiler with the dice results (our GMs roll all the dice for everything). That works out really well, and leaves the players to RP their guy.

We've basically given up any face to face RP any more, since we are scattered over the country and the world at this point, and when the local guys gather up we do other things like LCGs or Board Games, and still have that fellowship with each other. In fact we have a little CON every year where all the PbP folks gather up for a weekend of games and meet ups.

I love PbP. If you are looking to try some out, or try out a new place where its more like friends playing come look us up. http://brennor.dyndns.org/rpg

I'm Vardaen over there too, look me up.
