Searching for answers

Post by Fridokind Wargaug » Sun Sep 14, 2014 12:27 pm

Hey, another question:

The fellowship phase activity Seach for Answers is introduced in DoM and Rivendell, however with two different mechanisms. Is the Rivendell-version the new official one or just specific for searching for answers in Rivendell? Which mechanism do you prefer/use?

The two methods are virtually the same. It looks to me as if the version in Rivendell has been slightly simplified compared to the one in DoM. There's one skill roll (Lore) and the bonus die mechanism of the revised core rules has been extended to this test. The version in DoM uses two die rolls (Lore test then a feat die roll with modifiers for the levels of success of the original roll). Only the Eye result is different for Rivendell really with the Forbidden Knowledge result of DoM replaced by wasted time with Elvish songs, which makes sense in context.

If there is the possibility of something nasty being found them use the DoM version otherwise the Rivendell version.

Actually I don't think they are the same at all!

In DoM you can get the best result by complete chance, even with no Lore skill. In Rivendell, you have to have lore skills to get A Mystery revealed or lore skills and a lot of luck to even get Great Secrets. It seems harder in general to get the better results in the Rivendell version.

Is there an official statement to this?
