If there are Dwarf war goats and war boars in any mounted rules, I'm going to be mightily displeased. Bloody Peter Jackson. I've always defended his vision but that, as we say here in Ireland, was 'Beyond the Pale'. :x

Wait, what? I've never heard of those.

Are they from the most recent Hobbit movie? Because I haven't watched that one yet...didn't seem worth paying for after the first two.

In any case, as is evidenced by their treatment of, well, everything cubicle 7 pays little attention to the movies in terms of what's placed in the game, so I wouldn't worry.

Eh. Horses do fine in wooded areas, at least as long as there is a good path with some headroom. And even away from paths they're not completely crippled or anything, riding them in wooded areas in combat is a terrible idea, but they do fine unmounted or moving relatively slowly...okay, riding them slowly requires some headroom. I don't believe it's as clear cut as that. The Mirkwood is not just a "wooded area" and the Elf-path is not called "the Elf-road", presumably for a reason.

I'm not saying you couldn't get a horse through, just that's its not a given.

The waarboars and Dwarfish goat cavalry come from miniature wargaming, as does Dain's look. I don't expect to see them in TOR, thankfully. If you haven't seen the third PJ Hobbit movie yet, keep it that way.

At the risk of being fined for impersonating a moderator, I will note we have not yet had a thread on these forums attacking or defending Peter Jackson that could be considered a contribution to the community. I suggest we steer clear of expressing our opinions of the films.

Oh, believe me,I understand the way that GW have managed to exert their influence on the latest films and I have nought more to say on the subject. It just seemed pertinent to mention due to the discussion on Riding.

Anyway, I agree with Dave about characters who are proficient with horses being better at mtd combat etc. It will be interesting to see how the authors of TOR delineate between those who are considered proficient and those who are not.

I think that it's perfectly reasonable for anyone to be able to plod along on a pony or riding horse. Galloping or fighting from horseback would require a lot more skill and endeavour. If you weren't born in the saddle, get the heck off the horse when the fighting starts. :)

It will be interesting to see if they continue with the concepts used in Tales from Mirkwood. In "The Crossings of Celduin". In the contest at the Gathering of Five Armies, there is a contest where participants can use Athletics (for riding) and then Spear (for hurling their weapon at a target).
Adventure Summaries for my long-running group (currently playing through The Darkening of Mirkwood/Mirkwood Campaign), and the Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

I certainly wouldn't be surprised if Athletics or Travel are the 'go to' skills for riding and staying mounted in the appropriate circumstances. Mounted Combat might even come down to additions to the Combat Complications table, though I would be a little disappointed if it was as simple as a collection of pluses and minuses instead of something more abstract and evocative. :(

Athletics would seem to be the appropriate skill to use to stay mounted while performing complex or difficult riding maneuvers.I image that the Rohirrim culture at least will also have an appropriate Trait that can be invoked.

For myself, I am interested in how the Men of Gondor will differ from the Ranger of the North. Would they get the extra starting points?

My guesses for Background would be:

Knight of Dol Amroth
Ranger of Ithilien
Lore Master
Healer
Mariner of Pelargir
Horse Messenger

Cultural Blessing Perhaps something similar to The Barding cultural blessing due to living in the shadow of Mordor.
Perhaps an additional why to gain hope as it is constantly needed to continue so close to the enemy.
