We have been using wooden swords for LARPing for years. No thrusts but some strikes connected quite hard - there never was a problem. I do not think it is possible to cause any damage by NERF swords too easily - they are too light to cause a shock. But of course - better be safe than sorry.

If your nerf swords are doing insufficient damage, try coating them with nitrogen triiodide a few hours before a fight.
