Gorcrows and Crebain

Post by Hermes Serpent » Sat Sep 20, 2014 5:10 pm

Anyone done these creatures as adversaries rather than as psychological terrors lurking in the trees. I'd like to try something other than bats to push the company with a mix of creatures.

OK, no-one. Then how about
AL 2, Endurance 5, Hate 2, Parry 5, Armour 2d (highish Parry and Armour represent the agility of a bird)
Movement, Perception and Survival 3 ranks, other skill groups 0 ranks with Perception Favoured.
Attack Peck 2 favoured, AL damage, Eye edge and 12 Injury rating.
Abilities: Bewilder, Fell Speed, Snake-like speed, Fear of Fire

These creatures gather in great flocks and may give cover from the sun to those creatures who are affected by the sun. They scout for the forces of Shadow and report back the movements of enemies. Their attacks are distracting rather than damaging and they are normally found sitting in flocks, watching while perched on a tree branch.

In my (humble) opinion :
Hate : 2 is very powerfu with 4 habilities for this creature.
It seems to me they are individualy stronger than a snaga far an exemple.

Maybe is it possible to work on stats for different flock's size with endurance, hate and abilities increasing with the number of birds and making a great flocks become a "creature" to powerful even for a grey compagny :)

If i have 5 minutes this evening i would try something...

(Sorry for my poor english)

As for four abilities well, Bewilder costs a Hate point, Snake-like speed uses a Hate point, Fear of Fire causes loss of one Hate point. Bewilder is really the only ability that is useful in an attack (target gets basic Parry only) and with only a 2 dice +2 attack (average 9) the maximum damage inflicted is 6 (Success plus two tengwars). The other ability, Fell Speed, allows any hero to be attacked and also for escape from combat. I can see these creatures making one or two attacks and one defence, i.e one or two rounds only, before leaving or being almost unable to hit anything (Weary on zero Hate is a reduction of about 15% in the chance to hit for a 2D attack vs a defensive stance target).

I'd like to some generalized, TOR-ish rules for swarms/packs of critters. Rats, crebain, giant moths, swarms of bees, etc.

I finally manage to do this...

This what i rapidly made, taking the postulate that crebains are gregarious animals and danger lies in their numbers,

Small strip of Crebains
A small group of a dozen birds. They are discreet spies quite difficult to discern flying off a ridge or hidden among other bird species, like ravens or crows.

Attribut : 2, Hate : 1, Parry : 5, Armor : 1D , Endurance : 5

Skills : Movement : 2, Survival : 2, Perception 2, Vocation : 0, Custom : 0, Personnality : 0
Abilities : Bewielder, Speed like snake, Hate fire, Craven

Attack Peck 2 , Attribut level damage, Eye edge and 12 Injury rating.

A flock of brawling Crebains
This unit is made of about fifty creatures to one hundred patrolling the land in search of information to report. A lonely or injured individual should fear these opportunistic scavengers.

Attribut : 3, Hate : 2, Parry : 6, Armor : 2D , Endurance : 20
Skills :
Movement : 2
Survival : 3 (they are more effecient in band)
Perception 3, ( '' )
Vocation : 0, Custom : 0, Personnality : 0,
Abilities : Bewielder, Hate fire, Fell speed

Attack Peck 3 , Attribut level damage + 2 for fifty individuals (max + 4), Eye edge and 14 Injury rating.

A thick cloud of Crebains obfuscate the sun

This hundreds of birds fly like if they were a whole entity animated by a unique spirit.
This cloud may be missionned by a powerful master and announced shadowy times to come.
Travellers must fear such a gathering.

Attribut : 4, Hate : 3, Parry : 7, Armor : 3D , Endurance : 50
Skills :
Personnality : 1 (seeing this multitude may be quite impressive)
Movement : 3
Survival : 4, (they are more effecient in band)
Perception 4, ( escape their keen eyes is difficult )
Vocation : 0, Custom : 0
Abilities : Bewielder, Hate fire, Fell speed, Strike fire ( Spectators are stunned and unable to move)

Attack Peck 4 , Attribut level + 3 for one hundred individuals, Eye edge and 16 Injury rating.

Ditto...

I have already sent a ball of Crebain over my party of Hobbits to force them into cover, nearby one of them made a successful awareness and hunting rolls that (due to his near prostrate vantage) there was a faintly-rumbling shudder coursing through the earth beneath their feet, and was getting louder with each instance *There were two Mountain Trolls approaching from the treeline above them that hadn't noticed them yet and, neither had they noticed the trolls on the two instances prior that I had given them hints that something might be coming*

I don't have any plans for the Crebain to be interacted with at the moment, however...
