Custom Enchanted Quality: opinions?
Custom Enchanted Quality: opinions?
I'm working on the Magica Treasure Index for my fellowship, and I'm thinking about a variation upon the Warding-spell quality:
Protection-spell (better name?)
Craftsmanship: Elven
Item: Armour, Headgear, Shield
Special: Bane
An item bestowed with such a Quality gives you a bonus to your Valour or Wisdom roll when resisting Fear, Corruption or Dreadful Spells caused by a Bane creature. The Bonus is equal to your Wisdom or Valour, whichever is lower.
Do you see any problem with it?

I like it conceptually, but there's a lot of "or" in that description, which makes it sound like a swiss army knife enchantment. Some options:Corvo wrote:I'm working on the Magica Treasure Index for my fellowship, and I'm thinking about a variation upon the Warding-spell quality:

- "...when using Valour to resist a special ability of a Bane creature, add your Wisdom to the roll"
- The inverse: add Valour to Wisdom rolls
- Both? That's again sounding a bit too much to me, though. It could be two separate qualities, so that if you really want both it uses 2 slots.
I'd also make it only a helm. The things you're resisting are all mind-effecting, not physical effects, so shield or armor feels like a poor fit to me. Or maybe close combat weapons.

I see what you did there.Elfcrusher wrote:armor feels like a poor fit to me

And how about Limsanar for a better name. Roughly Clear Mind using a mix of Sindarin and Quenya.

Colorful, but I think I'd vote for ease-of-use over literary value. Not many players will be able to translate Quenya and Sindarin on the fly.arthyn wrote:I see what you did there.Elfcrusher wrote:armor feels like a poor fit to me![]()

Maybe call one "Strength of Mind" (add Valour to Wisdom rolls) and the other..."Better Part of Valour"? Ok, too clever...

Thank you Elfcrusher, I think you are right on both points:Elfcrusher wrote:I like it conceptually, but there's a lot of "or" in that description, which makes it sound like a swiss army knife enchantment. The object I'm working on is effetvely a Helm, with a Bane against Spiders.
I was looking at something that give protection against the spiders spells and lures (in DoM there are a lot).
Probably I would settle on bonus to Wisdom rolls equal to Valour... Or maybe twice the Valour, like the greater enchantments?
Re: Custom Enchanted Quality: opinions?
Following Elfcrusher's suggestion maybe it would be better to make this quality apply only to either Wisdom or Valour rolls, both is chosen twice.

What about:
Protection-spell (again, I need a better name)
Craftsmanship: Elven
Item: Headgear, close combat weapon
Special: Bane
An item bestowed with such a Quality gives you a bonus to your Wisdom rolls when you are fighting against a Bane creature equal to your Valour.

I don't get what you mean with "equal to your Valour", is it a reference to the creature's Attribute Level?Corvo wrote:What about:

"An item bestowed with such a Quality gives you a bonus to your Wisdom rolls when you are fighting against a Bane creature equal to your Valour." should probably read:
An item bestowed with such a Quality gives you a bonus equal to your Valour on any Wisdom rolls while fighting against a Bane creature.
An item bestowed with such a Quality gives you a bonus equal to your Valour on any Wisdom rolls while fighting against a Bane creature.

Re: Custom Enchanted Quality: opinions?
I copied the format from Rivendell's Warding-spell:
"An item bestowed with such a Quality gives you a bonus to your Parry rating when you are fighting against a Bane creature equal to your Wisdom or Valour, whichever is lower".
But Hermes Serpent's wording is clearer
