Ruling on Armor, RAW
Hi, I have read a lot of posts on the current armor RAW, and wanted to know -
Is there a final ruling by people in general - without any house rules, what amount of armor is good? Did we calculate that no armor is better than 1d, 2d, etc. or that it currently falls around a certain type?
Also, I assume that no ultimate simple solution was agreed on as a way to make heavier armor a more interesting choice?

It varies somewhat depending on culture and virtues (e.g., if you're a Beorning with Great Strength then obviously you don't want to go over the limit) but in most cases 2D or 3D of protection, for 8 or 12 encumbrance, works out best statistically.
But you can play with my simulator (linked in my .sig) and see for yourself what works best. Set up your character in the left column, pick an adversary (or group of them) on the right, set Iterations to "Lots", and see how often you win. Then change armor and try again.

I think the exact answer is a little more nuanced than "one size fits all". Here's my maxim: Wear the most protective armor you can, while still leaving enough room between your max endurance and your fatigue rating to take about 15 points of damage.
Some basic suggestions devoid of lots of analysis, fluff, summary, etc.
If you're a dwarf, coat of mail (4d)
If you have endurance of 29 or more, mail shirt (3d)
Anything less, leather corslet (2d)
This is subject to other things, not the least of which is that the rest of your weapons and armor are normalized and that you're not carrying a lot of heavy stuff (Great Shield, Great Axe, Hand Axe and a Great Bow for example).
Edit: Elfcrush makes a great point, above, about other specific considerations, such as Beorning Great Strength. In that case, I'd go with a Great Helm and a Great Spear and nothing else.

You are of course right, there is not a "one size fits all"... but your answer is also very helpful and concise!Rocmistro wrote:I think the exact answer is a little more nuanced than "one size fits all". I will do that!Elfcrusher wrote: But you can play with my simulator (linked in my .sig) and see for yourself what works best. Try to find an opponent that results in about 50/50 win/loss rate. That will give you the best measure of the delta when you start fiddling with gear/virtues.

Sounds good. Thanks for the advice.
It keeps freezing during the "Running" step. (Well, not technically freezing, but it gets stuck there).
I've tried in different browsers (Firefox, Chrome), and clearing cache, but it seems to happen anyway, esp. when I choose "Lots" of iterations. Almost never happens with 1 iteration, and some with "100 times". Not a huge deal, but thought I'd mention it.

How long are you waiting? It can take a while to process 10,000 battles.Blubbo Baggins wrote:Sounds good. Thanks for the advice.

Sometimes 10k only takes a minute. Other times I've waited 5 minutes and nothing seems to change. But I haven't set it and forget it. Next time that it seems to not be moving, I'll time it and get a better idea (and leave it until it posts results).
It has been working well so far, using 100 times. Adding the reward "Keen" seems to increase win % by 15% - 20%!
