WARNING SPOILERS!
Tomorrow I'm starting The Staff of the Roadwarden, year 2952 of DoM.
I would like a spidery encounter to spicy up the travel up to the Big Bad at the fort.
What I'm looking for is an encounter with Spiders (Great and lesser) that is interesting or unexpected, without the usual “you happen upon some webs: Spiders incoming”.
Someone got some ideas? The companions are stealthy and cunning. They'll try to avoid undue troubles.
Some notes:
1-Since the Fellowship is based off Dale, the adventure will be “reversed”, with the companions starting on the eastern end of the Old Forest Road and traveling West, between the Heart and the Mountains of Mirkwood... some of the worst places in the forest. It's going to be hard.
HotW makes this zone territory of spiders and bats, and I choose to underline the eeriness of the region avoiding any bipedal presence.
2-If the Fellowship triggers a Hunt (all too easy: Eye Awareness 7, Hunt threshold 14 or 12, -2 for great renown) I think a Secret Shadow will descend upon them -with a score of bats in tow-
Need some spidery encouter (DoM spoiler)
Re: Need some spidery encouter (DoM spoiler)
Hunter Spiders (HotW) seem custom built for this purpose, especially if they made (or used) tunnels or pits near or on the road. No telltale webs, and, if you do it right, a frantic battle in pitch darkness after the company has taken falling damage. Should get your players' hearts racing!

I hadn't thought about falling in spider-hole! Great idea

Oh, I like it. They have to explore some tunnels to find a way out, getting ambushed by spiders the whole time.

I also never thought of that falling into the spider's hole scenario, but it's a fantastic idea. Your heroes fumbling around in the dark with the unpleasant little darlings scuttling toward them should work like a charm.
