+1 Hope

Post by Glorelendil » Mon Sep 29, 2014 2:23 am

I spent the weekend with my nephews, ages 8 and 12. They wanted to play D&D. The 8 year old...playing a halfling assassing...is particularly bloodthirsty.

At one point he was trying to climb onto a mausoleum and rolled a 1. His first reaction was to complain and ask to re-roll. I said, "Instead of wanted to succeed at everything, why don't you tell us what happened?"

He thought about that, like it was something he never considered before. The after a moment he got excited and described how the stone was covered with slippery moss, and that's why he slipped off.

Another convert.

P.S. Then, fighting some ghouls, he rolled a 20 then got 6, 6, 6, 6, 6, and 4 on his damage dice. He liked that even more than the role-playing.

Awesome!

The twelve year-old and I played D&D 5e a couple of weekends ago... we had five players and everyone there was at least twice his age, but he played a wizard and rocked it; he even got to cast magic missile (but not at the darkness). He was so excited, he's drawn up big plans and was disappointed that the DM and other players could only commit to once or twice a month. Still, next game is this upcoming weekend and we're both pumped!

It is, but we forgot about Lucky until later.

In my experience kids rock at RPGs in general, one of the player I ever had was a 7 years old who asked me to play a Werewolf the Apocalypse demo durng a convention and knocked his character out of the park.

Fifth edition has exactly 18 skills, coincidence? Of course, they are not as elegantly arranged as some other games. ;)

Did you also notice there's also something like a journey phase and travel roles? I wonder where they got that from.

Also, aren't undead immune to sneak attack damage?

I am running a Pathfinder game, once a month, for a gaming club in the countryside, with teen and young adult players mostly, and this year a 12 year old girl started and made one of the funniest characters I've played with: she went for a Ranger, and was adamant in taking Dogs as Favored Enemy (which is very RP and quite "useless" in game terms normally). And, although she plays her character quite seriously (not as a joke or clown), she has his him killing any and all dogs he sees! He has this kind of dog-phobia & killing-urge, and loses it on seeing dogs. It is really funny, and well played.

I really can't wait until my daughter is old enough for me to make her play TOR or D&D with me. For the interim, I went to a panel at GenCon and learned about Mermaid Adventures and Hero Kids.
Elfcrusher wrote:But maybe the most important difference is that in D&D the goal is to build wtfpwn demi-god characters. In TOR the goal is to stay alive long enough to tell a good story.

I backed the Lone Wolf Kickstarter. If it seems like a good fit I'm going to send the whole shebang to my nephew (who will be almost 9 by the time it's out) and buy another set for myself at some point. Otherwise maybe MouseGuard.

By the way, this is another reason I want a really great PbP website: I only see my nephews once or twice a year but would love to run a campaign for them.
