I came from the school of 'rolling behind the GM screen for baddies' but for TOR I switched to Rolling in front of the players and it really cranked up the tension when they could see the dice in front of them. (Now we do it in all games).
Somehow it makes it more heroic - not sure why.

I suppose that would make LM fiat a non-entity and make everything crystal clear. Are you players familiar with the rules? Do they look at your rolls for enemies and then wait to see if you'll use Hate points on their special abilities? Doing it your way seems like it would remove any wonder the players might have about creatures of the shadow, for better or for worse.poosticks7 wrote:I came from the school of 'rolling behind the GM screen for baddies' but for TOR I switched to Rolling in front of the players and it really cranked up the tension when they could see the dice in front of them. I generally don't fudge numbers either, and most of the time I roll out in the open as well. I certainly err on the side of the players, though, and it's extremely rare for the PCs to die (in any game) unless they do so intentionally (as in, a heroic death).
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

It's funny how much tension you get out of rolling in the open.
"I won't cheat you," quickly turns into, "I won't save you."

My players are familiar with the rules concerning their actions - and that's it.gentlemansavage wrote:I suppose that would make LM fiat a non-entity and make everything crystal clear. I wear a tshirt which says:
"If the GM smiles, its already TOO LATE"
and I love it when a PC FUMBLES!!
Must be becoz I am a former Paranoia GM I suppose.....
Strongly recommend that everyone should GM Paranoia at least once!
Last session I rolled terrible for my bad guys unfortunately (and my players could see that I was rolling CRAP!! so they enjoyed it)
seriously, i think my players know that I will be hard but fair....
