So, even when the books aren't your reference point (because the books clearly state that elves use spears, from the High Elves of Rivendell to Mirkwood Elves) the elves in the films are even seen sporting polearm-style weapons...

Apart from Aiglos and the @nd picture all are rather swords with a long handle then pole-arms. Elrond's weapon is a katana-like sword (Hadhfang? something like that).

Apart from that I am a big fan of Mirkwood spears ;)

I had a character in a game whose player did exactly this. She used a long sword and throwing spear instead, mainly the sword. Took mastery to specialise in the weapon.
