Twice-Baked Honey Cake Availability
Re: Twice-Baked Honey Cake Availability
Hotsnow, maybe I can explain why the virtue is devalued if you allow for cakes to be bought:
My PC is a Beorning. I can spend 6xp (say) and take the Cake virtue. Fine.
Otherwise, I can spend 6xp and take Brother to Bears or some other virtue, AND spend some negligible money to have the same benefits of the Cake virtue.
No one would take the Cake virtue anymore.

Ok, firstly, it's a proposition, not a hard set rule... So, all of you flipping out (lol) you need to realize, that not only am I just musing about here, if it ever WERE to take place in any of my games, it would be solely within MY games and you all wouldn't have to worry about it.
That being said, I truly don't have any intention as of yet to do this... And I will say it slowly (AGAIN, as I said it just previously) that this is just a thought, not something to get all a'twist about.
Just a thought...
Calm down... LOL!

Don't worry HotSnow, I'm not upset at all about your house rulings. And sorry if I gave you this impression
I was just trying to clarify Elfcrusher's position, since you answered to him "I'm not sure how one Inn inviting a Beorning to bake at a bi-yearly event devalues the Beorning virtue..".
As Elf wrote, if you have no Beorning in your fellowship, there is no problem at all.
Just for comparison, in my all-Bardings fellowship I gave them Hounds of Mirkwood just for the sake of variety: no Woodman was offended, since I got none

So just for confirmation we aren't going around his house to batter in his door and take his books away?
(Puts battering ram away).
Next he'll be trying to plant pipeweed in the Anduin Vale. (actually that would be a fairly fun idea for a business venture for hobbits - and doesn't devalue anything).

It seems to me like the only one who might be flipping out is you. I honestly could not care less about what you do in your games. You can totally ignore everything that has been said in this thread. But I was under the impression that this thread started with you asking us what we thought.HotSnow50 wrote:So, all of you flipping out (lol) you need to realize, that not only am I just musing about here, if it ever WERE to take place in any of my games, it would be solely within MY games and you all wouldn't have to worry about it.

well your impression is correct, and I got the impression that you all thought it was something that didn't really flow too well, which I admitted... Then it sorta continued to come in hehe. The argument against seemed to be emotionally based upon what my idea did to the "poor Beorning that spent his bloodied-knuckles-earned XP on the ability." Then again, it's pretty hard to gauge whether what we read is just an opinion or if it's a heartfelt point.
I just didn't think my idea was anything other than a possible adventure arc, and it was somewhat startling to receive the communal impression that some thought what I was doing was actively negative ("if you allow this you devalue the sacrifices made by some Beorning characters"), which was TOTALLY not what I was attempting to do. I'm not trying to devalue anything.
You know how when people type in capital letters, the feeling you get is that people are "yelling?" You know, like: "I DON'T UNDERSTAND WHY MY PANTS ARE WET." I think the same thing happens when, on internet forums, someone tosses out an idea that several people disagree with, the OP either reiterates their original idea or tries to support it, those same several people and maybe some others reiterate their points, sometimes in a snarky way as they have the support of other dissenters, and then the OP needs to bow out gracefully hehe
It's kind of an interesting dynamic, I think.
*Digression completed*
"IT LOOKS LIKE TWICEBAKEDHONEYCAKES ARE BACK OFF THE MENU BOYS!!!!!" *Uruks dive in NOT eating the now regulated and protected Honey-Cakes... Beorn officially names April 14th "Save a TB Honey Cake Day" and requesting a Honey Cake in Beorn's presence without him offering one now results in a 100% chance of Beorn killing everyone in your party, save the Beornings*
;D Hehehe

Very true. It's hard to gauge someone's tone on the internet. Anyway, no worries either way.

Re: Twice-Baked Honey Cake Availability
I like the idea of having a source of Honey Cakes available from an inn. However, the Virtue of TBHC is the extra Hope point and the reduced TN number for journeys, and Virtue should be beyond price. *
It makes sense to me to allow the full effect of TBHC only if you have a Beorning Baker with you who has the Virtue. (or RAW of course!)
My suggestion is that buying cakes from the inn/shop can be allowed but there is this one (small) benefit:
"Any fellowship that has purchased Honey cakes from an inn/shop can reduce the difficulty of ONE Travel roll during the next journey by one level."
So you would only use these purchased cakes when you just miss one of your Travel rolls and you can then (in effect) add 2 to the total for the Travel roll because you chose to eat the cakes.
*I read in a gaming magazine a long time ago: "Virtue is learnt at Mother's knee: Vice at other joints"

On the flip side, TBHC could potentially be used to bribe/influence the enemy (for those of you who remember those old Hostess ads).
As the PC party is surrounded by a horde of angry Orcs, the Beorning reaches into his pack and pulls out some Twice-Baked Honey Cakes.
"Here, perhaps we can offer you some of this rich, creamy, fluffy golden goodness!"
The Orcs pause, puzzled.
"That smells disgusting, what is it?"
"Here...just try one!"
Soon, the PCs are seated around a campfire with all of the Orcs, laughing, singing songs, and swapping tales, as they enjoy TBHC together and learn that they have far more in common than they ever realized.
Not exactly canon, I suppose, but then it could have been worse, like this.

Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).
