I didn't have anything particular in mind, I was just curious about their instruments in general.

One of my players is a hobbit and he "plays" bird voices, so tweeting etc. Although it isn't really an instrument it is very hobbit fitting.
However, if you want to play a very musical hobbit, you might want to think about having a lot of instruments with you, a flute, a harp, a lute a vielle. Be creative! The one Barding adventurer I play in one of our group carries a string bass with him...

I have decided to do just that. My character carries a wooden flute, and a hobbit-sized lute. His favorite instrument, however, is his voice.

I know I am late to the party but instruments that appeared in our year long campaign were as follows.
An elf of Mirkwood with a harp.
A dwarf with drums. And a Dwarf with a hurdie gurdie (is that right.)
A man of lake town with a fiddle, and his brother with a harmonica.
An elf of rivendell had a flute. That is really all i can think of off the top of my head.

Given that the Dwarves in The Hobbit had clarinets (which are one of the most modern woodwind instruments going back a mere 300 years or so) I wouldn't worry overmuch about anachronisms.
