Well, Doriath Elves didn't dwell on the trees either. It seems to be a Lórien thing.

The passage from the book did say that the Wood-elves sometimes built dwellings in the trees. They just were not consistent about it. Even tree-dwellers sometimes need to keep some outbuildings on the ground for horses and suchlike.
