Rolling the Feat dice twice: best or worst result
Rolling the Feat dice twice: best or worst result
I have a quick question about rolling the Feat dice twice and keeping the best or worst result.
In the case of a Fear test, a Barding character, due to its Cultural Blessing: Stout-hearted, can roll the Feat dice twice and keep the best result.
What if the Barding character is testing Fear against an invisible Ringwraith?
Thr Ringwaraith would force any character to roll the Feat dice twice and use the worst result.
How should a Loremaster handle this situation?
Thank you guys.

Generally, I'd rule in favour of the PC. But you could also have him roll twice and keep the best (A), roll twice and keep the best (B), and then pick the worst between A and B.

Ooh...good catch. I'd use the D&D 5e rule and have them cancel.

Another option is to apply the rule for Invoking Flaws | Feat Re-roll found on page 227 of the Revised book:
"If a hero was already entitled by a special ability to roll the Feat die twice and keep the best result, then the Flaw neutralizes the ability and lets him roll the Feat die just once."

I thought about the D&D 5e rule to have the benefit and the penalty canceling each other whatsoever.
It's pretty much the same idea presented by the Flaw Rule.
I suspect the player would prefer the suggestion of rolling 2 Feat dice twice (they love to roll dice).

Or roll 3 and take the middle.

Re: Rolling the Feat dice twice: best or worst result
If you did want to roll twice twice (aka quadruple), then the question becomes whether you:
1) Roll two dice, take the best. Roll two dice, take the best. Take the worst of those two.
or
2) Roll two dice, take the worst. Roll two dice, take the worst. Take the best of those two.
I believe statistically, option #1 is slightly favorable.

In this instance I'd probably go with the 5e role in my own campaign and have them cancel each other out.
That also works in 5e where you get more than one source of 'advantage' or 'disadvantage' - they don't stack. So it's only ever roll with advantage, roll with disadvantage, or roll normally.

I use this idea/rule. I think it's the easiest way to handle the situation, without lots of debate.beckett wrote:Another option is to apply the rule for Invoking Flaws | Feat Re-roll found on page 227 of the Revised book:
