Sure. I would just ask that he or she explain it in the fiction, at least a little bit. Something like "pipe weed is hard to come by, but I have found that nimble fingers and quiet feet can get me a lot more."artaxerxes wrote:Could a Hobbit without Burglary take it then, in addition to say Rhymes of Lore? Thank you for the reference. I do like the gaining as reward mechanic and was leaning in this direction to begin with.
Re: ? about Specialty Lores
As Loremaster, I have just recently given one of my PCs a new distinctive feature, Sangfroid (basically cool under fire), as a result of the PC rolling a Gandalf and THREE tengwars on a valour roll to stand his ground against a charging troll!
After a particularly successful adventure in the Barrowdowns, I also gave all three members of the party the specialty Ranger after they were inducted into the Dunedain Rangers for their heroism and service to the Dunedain.
While there is no mechanism for gaining new distinctive features/specialties in the game, as LM, I have created a house rule that you can earn new features/specialties (that don't replace old ones, the add to the PCs' list) for particularly noteworthy or heroic deeds (purely at the LM's discretion). I use this in addition to experience and skill points to reflect the character's growth and development.

Re: ? about Specialty Lores
Sageryne, your house rule is a very licit one, and that has a logic of its own.
Something that you might think about is making this new traits last only for one year/one adventuring phase.
You know, as time goes by, things tend to get forgotten, history becomes legend, people change their ways...
This is one of the mechanisms that some Fellowship Undertakings use so that players are able to gain traits otherwise unobtainable, but to control that they don't end with 10 different distinctive features.
Just an idea.

There's a precedent for "earning additional traits" in Tales from Wilderland.
