Camaraderie, inspiration, boredom, discussion of rules, arguing about Tolkien, looking for alternative character sheets, unlimited rice pudding, etc., etc.

Why ISN'T it easy? Draw a map of some connected caves, populate it with some nasties, let loose the players. Make stuff up when they go beyond your notes.

I didn't realize the rice pudding was unlimited!
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Some people might bemoan that we're not doing a supplement on X or not started work on Y or abandoned Z, but I'm just going to pop up and enigmatically comment that C7 are working on lots of exciting things all at once, and not all of them have been announced/are on our schedule.

Cool. Cool. Cool. Exciting stuff... I wish you could say more but understand why you can't.

By the same logic, adventures in Mirkwood are even easier because you don't have to draw caverns. Just populate it with nasties and let loose the players!

But it's not the maps or the monster stats that make HotW, TfW, and DoM amazing. It's the interwoven stories and personalities and plots that bring the region to life. Certainly a LMs don't need those supplements to play TOR, but lots of people seem very happy about them anyway.

Just popping up to say that one of the advantages of adventuring in Middle Earth is that there are volumes of source material out there.

I often turn to an early version of this one http://www.amazon.co.uk/Atlas-Middle-Ea ... 0618126996 which has lots of info for budding LMs.

From recollection there's an internal cutaway of the Lonely Mountain with some key places. There's also something for Moria (although admittedly the western end consists of one long tunnel with lots of starts to side tunnels.

It maps out the whole of Middle Earth (and I mean the whole of it and not just the sections of Middle Earth that appear in the books) so the potential is huge.

The answer as to why any of us are here, is that none of us would be here if it wasn't for the work C7 has done because we could 'just make up some rules and start playing'. That's a very noble sentiment, but it's exactly the craftsmanship that has gone into TOR that have gathered us.

Beyond that, I don't personally have the time to write all of my own material. And even if I did, I'm not sure it'd be anywhere near as interesting and thought through as C7's (best) material is.

Andrew: Yeah, I figure that's the case, just adding my vote to the stack :D

It's just always worth reminding folks from time to time that not everything is on the (public) schedule ;)
