New Adventurer Here!

Post by Original Aragorn » Tue Nov 25, 2014 2:14 am

Hi, I'm new to this site and new to the game. I figured I'd introduce myself. I'm in my mid-40's and I'm an avid RPG'er in general. I find that I mostly have to RUN the games if I want to play them. In the past, it's mostly been D&D and Arduin. I've also dabbled in King Arthur Pendragon, which I LOVED but my gaming group didn't. (They preferred straight hack & slash, which isn't my preference).

I'm a big Tolkien fan (I'm sure I'm not the only one on this site LOL). I have recently discovered TOR. I have so far only ordered the hardcover core rulebook. I'm mostly through it and it looks and feels FANTASTIC! I hope I can get my group to take a break from D&D for a while and play this game. Since I'm the guy that runs the game, they may not have a choice.

The mechanics and feel seem to be wonderful, along with the art and the bountiful quotes and examples.

One minor query: I ordered my book at Amazon and within three weeks it has nearly fallen apart at the seams (literally). So I just filed for a refund and will send the book back. Perhaps I will have to just get it in soft copy at Drivethru RPG. Has this been a problem for others? Or did I just get a defective copy? And I don't treat my books harshly. Again - I love the system, I've just never had the pages separate from the binding so quickly in a book.

PS: A bit of trivia about me. My middle name is Aragorn (thus my screen name). My father was an avid Tolkien fan. When my brother and I were 10 and 11 years old he read us the Hobbit and the entire trilogy cover to cover. It was one of the best things in my early life. When he finished the last page of Return of the King, he wept. It was a powerful experience for him.

Welcome, George (and Original Aragorn)!

You'll find this is a great site with lots of helpful Tolkien fans. You're spot-on that the books are beautiful. The game is a blast, too, thought some facets of it might take a bit of time for your group to appreciate. At first I had a few players grumbling about a few things, and one of them dropped for a session (thinking it wasn't his cup of tea). We continued on without him, and (since we were in the middle of an adventure), I had his PC continue on with the rest of the party (run by a willing player). His Hobbit character ended up being the star of the night, wounding a Troll with an arrow, getting an extraordinary result on a Search (and finding an important item) and more! We all had such a blast that word got back to that player. You know what? He was there the next session, and now he's enjoying himself along with everyone else. Three nights ago, when we played last, I asked that player if he was glad he hadn't quit, and he affirmed that he was (glad he came back).

That's too bad about the binding. My first book (soft cover) fell apart right away, and when I contacted C7 they had fantastic customer support, instantly sending me a new copy. Unfortunately, that one is starting to come apart as well, though not as bad as that first one. I was hopeful that the hardback version was/is much more sturdy, but I haven't gotten one yet (planned to put it on my Christmas list, along with a lot of other TOR goodness!)

Great to have you here, and your story of your dad reading the books to you was awesome! I once read the Hobbit to my whole family, but we never ended up finishing it.
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Welcome onboard!

I have the hardcover and it's been doing fine. But things happen. Reach out to the C7 folks, they might well be able to help you out. Or maybe Amazon will send you a replacement copy. The hardcover is so beautiful (and full of nice, revised rules) that I'd strongly encourage you to try to go that route. Of course, I've heard good things about the bindery that DT uses as well.

Welcome to the forums! Strangely, you're the second actual Aragorn I've met.

As for your book, if you need any help with sorting it please email Nick in customer services (info AT cubicle7.co.uk).

Same here.

Thanks for the warm welcome and comments. :)

I feel kind of bad that my first post made mention of those binding issues in my book. I'm sure it's an anomaly. Again, the contents look to be first class. And I will look to get my hands on some supplements as well.

Uh Oh! So I may not be the "Original" Aragorn after all.

Hi Original Aragorn,

There is a woman at the University where my wife works called Arwen Evenstar. Perhaps we should introduce the two of you...

With regards to the Rulebooks, if you purchase them through Cubicle 7 you get the PDFs which you can then print (preferably at work) and put in a ringbinder.
