New fellowship undertakings

Post by Arkat » Mon Dec 01, 2014 10:28 am

We had our first fellowship phase last game. And while there are some undertakings that are interesting for all characters (like reduce shadow and raise standing) I feel that there are a lot of basic options lacking. In the supplements there are few interesting options too, but most are special cases that apply for certain people in certain situations. I miss the basic, generic undertakings that allow the characters to attach themselves to the setting.

So I have made up a few of my own. You’ll probably see that I’m a long time Pendragon GM :)

Court lover
You spend time trying to win the heart of your love. You have to be in the same location as the person you are courting. Every time you chose this undertaking you have to spend Treasure equal to you love’s Standing +1. This undertaking is an extended test that can span multiple fellowship phases and you need to collect a number of successes equal to your love’s standing to win his or her heart. Roll Courtesy. Diff: 10 + Ability + Difference in Standing. An Eye of Sauron indicates frustration or jealousy and gives you +1 Shadow. A Gandalf rune indicates euphoric love and you regain 1 Hope.

Get married
If you have successfully courted a lover, you can marry this person. You have to be in the same location as your love and spend Treasure equal to the highest Standing x10. When you are married your maximum Hope rating is increased by 1. The couple’s new standing equals the average standing of the husband and wife +1.

Raise family
If have been married and are in your home location you can spend time raising your family. This undertaking let you regain 1 Hope. Also roll one feat die: S: Death in the family (random), +1 Shadow. 1-3: Sickness, +1 Shadow, 4-6: No effect, 7-10: Child born, G: Bliss, Child born -1 Shadow.

Settle down
You can settle down in any Sanctuary. Spend treasure equal to your standing to be able to treat the sanctuary as a home location.

It's very nice!

A very original way of recovering Hope... while risking gaining some Shadow, too.

By the way, the Standing of your love is just decided by the LM, right? By knowing who the love is and looking at the Status table, I guess.

+1 This was definitely needed. I have a feeling they are going to release a very similar ruleset with the upcoming supplement "Adventurer's Companion" which will have expanded generational rules.

Yeah that is the idea. As a LM I'll introduce my players to suitable candidates from different social levels. Some players might want make a pass at Irime (Standing 6) while others might just want marry the girl next door and have lots of kids (Standing 1). Both have their advantages. There are clear advantages to marrying above your standing, but it takes a lot of time, costs a lot of money and is hard to pull off. Marrying someone from your own standing is a lot easier to do.

Another undertaking I'm considering is "Practice skill". At first I started to list all kinds of activities you could do in the fellowship phase like hunting, exploring the area, spending time at court and so on. But then I realized that this could all fall under the heading "Practice skill". Not sure if this is overpowered:

Practice skill.
You have to be in a location appropriate to the skill practiced. Roll the skill against Diff 14. Each success gives you one mark in the skill group advancement point track. (Note this is supposed to rolled before you erase the marks you got while adventuring, so the number of points is limited by your free slots.)

Nice work Arkat.
I had to resort to tweaking Pendragon's rules when some characters in my campaign married (dalish thanes, by the way).
I think would use these rules for future undertakings :)

About the bolded part, what do you mean with "Ability"? Is it Attribute?

I think he refers to Courtesy. See "Roll Courtesy" just before your bolded text.

I meant the npc's attribute rating. Sorry about that :)

I'd change the undertaking's name to Go a Courtin'.
