It states that: Selected items Protection rating gets a +1 bonus. Does this mean this if I use it on my
Mail-Shirt which has a protection of 3d, does is it now have a value of 3d+1 or 4d?

Based on the wording, it is a bonus of +1 (e.g. 3d+1 in your example). Also, this would explain why you can select it multiple times, otherwise it's way too powerful. As it is, I think it's a bit too weak. I would think that another way to do it would be "the first time this Quality is selected for an armour piece, it confers a bonus of +2 to the protection rating. Each additional time it is selected, the bonus is improved by one, so a Mail-Shirt which has had three workings to make it Close-Fitting is 3d+4 in protection value."

That way, it's a bit more in line with Fell/Grievous/Cunning Make.
