Re: Where are all the clubs and maces?
I would not call Beorn an adversary

Re: Where are all the clubs and maces?
Is this [page 276 revised TOR] the only example of a 'Maul'? If so, I read it as the mauling action of Beorn's claws rather than him having the use of a hammer-like weapon wielded by Beorn when in bear mode. I imagine Beorn (in man mode) to be wielding his axe. The Damage becomes Beorn's Attribute level; and the Edge & Injury not a lot more intense than the Rending caused by a Wolf's claws. I would be OK with the impact of a bear's claws being enough to knock a shield away and shatter it as a called shot effect.Glorelendil wrote:But it's an adversary weapon, which generally have inferior stats compared to hero weapons.Yepesnopes wrote:The only official stats are for the maulKhamul wrote:Where are all the blunt weapons? like clubs, maces and so on?

SPOILER: There is a Hill Troll chief with a specialist Black Mace Damage 8 (again the same as the attribute level coincidentally) in Rivendell page 69.
I am assuming that no-one is talking about the The Multi-shot Accessory Underbarrel Launcher "MAUL" either... or is that an enhanced Dale windlass...?
Re: Where are all the clubs and maces?
Yeah the "maul" of Beorn is from the verb to maul, defined as royally bleeping someone up.
The mace is interesting.

Oh I thought Yepes was getting his stats from the troll in Rivendell.

Sorry guys. I have little knowledge of english. I understtod maul as the hammer. Indeed, it makes more sense that maul referes to the verb.
Re: Where are all the clubs and maces?
I now think too that Helm Hammerhand used his fist to maul his victims
But still think its very strange that clubs and such weapons would be excluded....

Speaking of which, I'm hoping that at some point there's an option to play a weaponless warrior in the spirit of Tulkas.Khamul wrote:I now think too that Helm Hammerhand used his fist to maul his victims

I was pondering about hand to hand myself. While I don't want to see some kind of D&D Monk unarmed fighter, but it would be nice to have some more detailed options.Glorelendil wrote:Speaking of which, I'm hoping that at some point there's an option to play a weaponless warrior in the spirit of Tulkas.Khamul wrote:I now think too that Helm Hammerhand used his fist to maul his victims

On the subject of blunt weapons, I usually compare them to axes in terms of stats, but I switch the called shot from shield breaking to knockback. It's not a perfect equivalent, but it's close enough most of the time.

I think it makes more sense when you consider that the designers of TOR are seeking to evoke the flavour of Dark Age Europe in the look and feel of the setting.Khamul wrote:But still think its very strange that clubs and such weapons would be excluded....
Maces and hammers were not common weapons in Western & Northern Europe during this period. They were more common in the Middle East where both the Byzantines and Seljuk Turks used maces.
There are exceptions here and there, of course. For example, Bishop Odo is depicted using a club at Hastings, but one could argue that that is the dawn of the early medieval period anyway.
Both the mace and military hammer were arguably a response to the development of rigid, plate armour, as their concussive force could injure and kill without the need to actually pierce.
