Advantage and Disadvantage (Terminology)

Post by Glorelendil » Wed Jan 14, 2015 3:19 am

I would like to propose that we, the TOR community, adopt from D&D 5e the terms "Advantage" and "Disadvantage" to mean rolling the Feat die twice and taking the best or worst result, respectively.

The absence of these terms nagged at me all the way through my proposals for modified Feats and Virtues. It seemed like I had to type long and convoluted sentences where "...with Advantage" would have sufficed.

Then in a message Zedturtle just sent me he used "Advantage" this way and I thought, "THE MADNESS HAS TO STOP!"

So, there. My proposal is on the table. Any seconds*?

*Note to Hobbits: I don't mean second helpings.

I second this. We might even consider expanding its use. It's one of the really elegant mechanics of D&D 5E.

I agree. It would make things a bit easier.

I think it makes a lot of sense.

I hereby register my dislike of this D&D terminology, and request it not be made some kind of unofficial forum standard.

Because it's from D&D? Or because you don't think the term(s) are sufficiently descriptive?

Because the rulebooks go out of their way to avoid games jargon.
Because I'm a GURPS player, and these words mean something else to me.
Because new members aren't going to be aware of the terminology, so you're going to have to explain it anyway.
Because unofficial surveys should not dictate policy.

I really like the idea: "rolling Feat dice twice & selecting best/worst result" is a mouthful to type/read or remind

But I don't like the idea of creating any polarisation on the forum if there's a way to sidestep it.
Can I suggest 'Superior Roll' and 'Inferior Roll' to cover the same idea? (unless this is another D n D term - which I am ignorant of)

Or simply use something like "Keep Best/Keep Worst".

I'm all for another term, maybe one that sounds more Tolkieny. Although even that would only address one of Stormcrow's objections.

I'm wracking my brain for ideas....
