The Beast of Mirkwood
What or who is the Beast of Mirkwood mentioned in the backstory of the pregenerated character, The Bride? One of my players chose her and kept the story, and wants to hunt it down -- but I realized I have no clue what or where it is or where to find info on it. If I google it I get random info about beasts of mirkwood, like spiders and birds, and fell beasts of the nazgul.

Hadn't looked at it in a lot time, but my first guess is the Werewolf of Mirkwood.MasterSmithwise wrote:What or who is the Beast of Mirkwood mentioned in the backstory of the pregenerated character, The Bride? This was my first guess as well, but then that's kind of a big deal, and I don't know that I want my players chasing after this thing.zedturtle wrote: Hadn't looked at it in a lot time, but my first guess is the Werewolf of Mirkwood.

It's a worthy 'final boss' for a campaign. But don't forget it IS a final boss!

I just discovered the Werewolf's info is in the Darkening of Mirkwood companion book. Now I have another book to buy, haha.

On the plus side, you definitely aren't going to regret buying the Darkening of Mirkwood. It's not only the best supplement in the One Ring product line (which has yet to produce a bad supplement), it's one of the best RPG campaighns ever produced.MasterSmithwise wrote:I just discovered the Werewolf's info is in the Darkening of Mirkwood companion book. The only thing I can hold up as a worthy comparison to tDoM is the Great Pendragon Campaign for the Pendragon RPG. And given that Pendragon has apparently been quoted as one of the TOR team's top RPGs I suspect that's not a coincidence.

Re: The Beast of Mirkwood
You could also just invent a beast. Like a really strong orc or spider. Not like the werewolf or shelob's children, those might be too big for a personal adversary. But something inbetween. Something that can fight an entire group of adventures and make them retreat so that the fight has to be continued another time. (Also super anti-historic, I really liked the Azog-Thorin story in the Hobbit movies.)
I'm trying out the exact same thing with one of my players. For christmas I always let them make a wish and the one guy wished to have a personal campaign which results in him getting a legendary weapon. So right now I'm inventing a big orc with many of the attributes from Rivendell he has to hunt down

Re: The Beast of Mirkwood
It's fairly strongly implied that the Beast is the Werewolf of Mirkwood given that the Bride had Wolf-Lore as her enemy knowledge. If you are only doing a few adventures and actually wanted to resolve that plot-line you could make the Beast a Hound of Sauron instead, though it may lack the epic feel of having the Werewolf as her personal nemesis. Of course, you could do both, having the Bride lead the effort to track down and destroy Warg packs all over Wilderland, leading the Bride to think she's destroyed it, only to hear rumors of an even greater and more terribly Beast that still stalks the woods. The Werewolf's stats are actually in the Loremaster's Guide, as well, though I still give a high recommendation to Darkening.
