Lesser Ring
Is it worth it? Or is the price of a permanent Shadow too high for a +1 to base attribute? (usually rewards don't come with such drawbacks...)
Re: Lesser Ring
I ruled it was a +1 to base AND favored, impacting all associated characteristics. To me, that offsets the +1 Perm shadow while worn.

Re: Lesser Ring
It does. A lesser ring of Heart raises your endurance, your max hope, your favored heart, etc. A lesser ring of Wits increases your parry score. A lesser ring of body increases damage.
Still, it's a permanent point of Shadow, complete with the Shadow degradation that goes with it.
So again, is it worth it?
And which Lesser ring (Body, Heart, Wits) is most valuable? There's a good argument for the Wits Ring to get to Wits 9 and be dodging like a ninja...

It quite explicitly says in the Rivdendell book that it improves both the base and favoured attribute. You don't need to house rule on that.ThrorII wrote:I ruled it was a +1 to base AND favored, impacting all associated characteristics. To me, that offsets the +1 Perm shadow while worn.

But...is it worth the price, is the question I keep trying to ask. Permanent Shadow permanently alters your character for the worse. No other reward has such a potent drawback. Yet +1 raw attribute is not the most potent reward out there.

Re: Lesser Ring
Eh...it's worth slightly more than Fell Handed and Dour Handed combined when applied to Body...and better than a Spearman's Shield for Wits. It's a bit weaker when applied to Heart...though +1 Endurance and +1 Hope is still about a Virtue on its own (and it adds to uses of Hope on Heart skills as well).
None of those are the best Virtue/Reward ever, but several aren't bad. IMO, it's probably not worth it until your Wisdom is real high (4-5 or so) and your likelihood of gaining additional shadow is really low. Once you've hit that point, if you've managed to avoid permanent Shadow entirely, grabbing it seems worth it to me, but not until then.

Hmmm. Seems like for a reward with a massive price attached, +1 Stat doesn't do enough. Perhaps if it boosted you to 'max' stats for the race... (7, 5, 8) it might be worth the point of Shadow.

I must correct you: the text says that you get a Permanent point of Shadow, which does not mean you also get a Flaw correlated to your Shadow Weakness.Angelalex wrote:Still, it's a permanent point of Shadow, complete with the Shadow degradation that goes with it.

This happens also in other instances, where you get a Permanent point of Shadow without suffering bouts of madness or developing a Flaw. You simply get a Shadow point you cannot get rid of, period.
So, in my opinion, that's definitely worth it

The Rivendell book underwent some pretty extensive changes between being open for preorder and final production. When we got the initial PDF in July, it was necessary to house-rule that.bluejay wrote:It quite explicitly says in the Rivdendell book that it improves both the base and favoured attribute. Re: Lesser Ring
Huh. I thought all permanent points of Shadow, regardless of how gotten, gave you the Flaw associated with your weakness.
