Need help - River and Lake names in Southern Mirkwood

Post by kladan » Thu Jan 29, 2015 6:37 pm

Hi everyone,

I am getting ready to run my first The One Ring game shortly - very excited for it.

The action will take place in / near Woodmen Town. I notice that there is a river running through Mirkwood just to the east of it, joining a lake of notable size. However I can't seem to find the names for either the river or the lake anywhere.

I could just come up with something but staying faithful to canon is one of the big draws of this game for me and I'd greatly appreciate if someone here could help me find the proper names for this river and lake.

Thanks in advance!

I believe it is the Dusky River and the Black Tarn.

beckett, thanks very much for your response!

Is there any way you could link to the source of this? At least one desrciption of the Black Tarn I found certainly matches it (though I'm not having much success finding more than one), but the internet gives me nothing on the Dusky River..

It is named as such in the core Rulebook and Heart of the Wild. Tarn simply means lake and the Dusky River is from the House of the Wolflings by William Morris (which also contains a Mirkwood and woodmen and is almost certainly what Tolkien was thinking of when he introduced the same into the Hobbit).

I don't think there's any primary source links for either name though.

You'll find more information about both locales (like the River-maidens) on p. 20 of the Darkening of Mirkwood, too.

I have to admit I was a bit confused by this as well, as they don't seem to be labeled as such on most TOR maps.
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).
