Pronunciation of Ceawin?
Pronunciation of Ceawin?
So how do you think Ceawin should be pronounced?
I know in Elvish Tolkien's Cs are all hard (sound like K's), but I would imagine this isn't the case for names of Men.
Do you think it's:
SEE-win?
SEE-a-win?
KEY-a-win?
Something else?

Re: Pronunciation of Ceawin?
There doesn't seem to be a distinction. C is K, in all cases. I imagine because the language all originated from the same source. EA is always read as 2 syllables. So, if I had to guess (which is often the best you can do with Tolkein words) it would be:
KEH-uh-win ,which when said with lazy english comes out as KAY-uh-win.
Hope that helps.

This .. though I'd pronounce it the Kay-uh-win way ... I suppose I'm lazyMasterSmithwise wrote:KEH-uh-win ,which when said with lazy english comes out as KAY-uh-win.

Thanks, MasterSmithwise and Valarian. I'm no linguistic scholar, and I know there are many here with much more knowledge on stuff like this. This forum is a great resource for stuff like that.
Of course I could just go with whatever sounds good to me. But it's kind of fun to have some consistency, since Middle-earth is so well constructed and detailed, especially with regards to languages and pronunciations.

Huh. Board ate my post. I'd use http://weofodthignen.livejournal.com/158550.html
and pronounce it CHeawin. But that could be wrong.

I agree. In IPA, I'd say it's: kʰe:awɪnMasterSmithwise wrote: KEH-uh-win ,which when said with lazy english comes out as KAY-uh-win.

Re: Pronunciation of Ceawin?
I don't think it "ch" because Ceawin would be written down in Westron and I guess they used Elvish pronounciation rules for that, so c=k. But my asumption could be wrong, toozedturtle wrote:Huh. Board ate my post. I'd use http://weofodthignen.livejournal.com/158550.html

Re: Pronunciation of Ceawin?
Dumb question, is Ceawin somewhere in the Tale of Years? Otherwise, if it's just an OE name reused, the pronunciation rules might not apply. (Probably still do, knowing the authors).

I don't remember reading that name before...
But I'd guess no, because of his minor role (he was the leader of a small community) and we only know great names (Kings of Dale, leaders of the Beornings etc.) from that time in that place.

Oh no, I don't expect him to actually be listed in his current position. But a lot of characters that appear in the game are named after folks that appear somewhere in the source material, Baldor and Belgo for example.Fridokind Wargaug wrote:I don't remember reading that name before...
