I've just finished loremastering the Watch on the Heath (the final adventure in Tales from the Wilderland anthology), and there was a Journey Hazard Episode involving an ancient dwarven road: the characters felt attracted by the road and had to make Corruption tests to avoid travelling until the very end of it.
It is said, in the text, that the "force" driving the characters down that road is matter for another adventure... but which adventure? Is it published material (in Darkening of Mirkwood, perhaps), or is it up to Loremasters to decide what lies at the end of that road?
And in the second case, did some of you craft something about that plot? I would be very interested to read it!
Watch on the Heath spin-off adventure?
Re: Watch on the Heath spin-off adventure?
After a quick review of both Tales and Heart (and not remembering anything specific about this in Darkening), I'd say it would seem up to the LM. It might be that they heard the calling of Farmann, but I don't think he's quite that powerful. Or perhaps the road leads to the Greydelve or to the Hoary Mountain.Michebugio wrote:I've just finished loremastering the Watch on the Heath (the final adventure in Tales from the Wilderland anthology), and there was a Journey Hazard Episode involving an ancient dwarven road: the characters felt attracted by the road and had to make Corruption tests to avoid travelling until the very end of it.

Personally, I'd probably tie it into the Greydelve and Frár's question to reclaim the stronghold. That means that there most be something stronger than just an ordinary troll or orc chieftain down there... a powerful wight or maybe a mortal sorcerer in thrall to the Enemy.

Regarding a possible source of the "pull" from Greydelve...
From HoTW pg 23:
"Some tales claim that they dug so deep that they broke into the ruins of some lost fortress from the First Age of the
world, and found things there so terrible that they walled up those deeper passageways and warded them with traps
both cunning and lethal."
I plan to adapt something from Decipher's Fell Beasts and Wondrous Magic.

Re: Watch on the Heath spin-off adventure?
We're far from it in our campaign, but I'm always thinking of a way to make the quest for Greydelve interesting, as our dwarven treasure-hunter is very interested in it. He deserves an epic recovery (or epic failure) of the dwarven fortress. As I'll probably skip the plots regarding Bard and his succession, at least as adventures, I'm thinking of using the Vampire in some way. It's lair will be the Greydelve, and I'll have to think about everything else.
In fact, there are so many plots in Darkening that I think it's impossible to get them all in just one campaign.

Some very interesting ideas there, thanks!
Absolutely true. Also, a lot of secondary plots and ideas from DoM and Heart of the Wilderland would really deserve more development, monster stats, and to be put in small adventures. Think about the conflict between Beorn and Viglund, for example: that would be such an interesting story.Falenthal wrote:In fact, there are so many plots in Darkening that I think it's impossible to get them all in just one campaign.

Throw in the Forest Dragon, that awakens in their part of Rhovanion, and also the rise of Mount Gundabad. You have enough material for a full campaign just in the northwest corner of Rhovanion.Michebugio wrote:Some very interesting ideas there, thanks!
