searching the forum (for Less Frequently Asked Questions)

Post by StuartJ » Thu Feb 12, 2015 5:53 pm

The new proposed FAQ thread is a great idea, but there's been a wealth of interesting and useful discussion about other stuff too. If you are looking for previous discussions about a subject, you may find the built-in forum search a bit frustrating and limited because it ignores 'common words'. E.g. you can't search for 'Wilderland', 'Mirkwood', 'Elf' and no doubt more besides...

However, you can invoke the power of Google.. Doing a Google search, type 'site:forums.cubicle7.co.uk' before your search terms, and it will show you results just from this site!

You can make this even easier if you use Firefox, Chrome, or Opera as your browser:
  1. install the right plugin for your browser to run 'user scripts' to customise your browser. This is Greasemonkey if you are using Firefox, Tampermonkey if you are using Chrome, or Violent Monkey if you are using Opera.
  2. install the Google search on site user script. Just go to the linked URL and click 'Install'.
  3. whenever you want to do a Google search on the site you're currently on, press ctrl+shift+9 and you'll get a little pop-up search box at the bottom of the screen. Enter your search terms then press enter and you'll go to a page with the Google search results. (For more about the script, see the usage instructions on the installation page).

Great advice. We can include it in the FAQ post.
