So, will we ever get a Wizard type profession?
So, will we ever get a Wizard type profession?
I know Cubicle 7 were adamant about never allowing PCs to have access to spellcasting, but now that the game has been out for years, perhaps they might allow a Magician type class for those who want to play a character similar to Gandalf?
The Decipher system had a very flavorful and low magic spellcasting system that reflected Middle Earth magic quite well, so it can be done. And it will be optional, in a supplement, so those who don't want it don't have to purchase or use it.

Xex:
If I were to place a bet, I'd say "probably not."
And I for one would be in favor of never seeing such material in TOR.

While we might get more info on Gandalf (or Saruman) and his abilities, I doubt we will get official rules on playing them or other wizards. But there is magic in the Virtues; if you want to add more see my thread, if you want a full Calling/class check out Robin Smallburrow's work, right below your thread at moment.Xex wrote:I know Cubicle 7 were adamant about never allowing PCs to have access to spellcasting, but now that the game has been out for years, perhaps they might allow a Magician type class for those who want to play a character similar to Gandalf?

Gandalf was an Angel in human form. This is not an exaggeration, it is a part of the cosmology of Middle Earth. Powerwise he was on a par with the balrog and only a step below Sauron. Certainly greater than Elrond or Galadriel. That is before factoring in the fact that he wore one of the Three as well.
So, never Gandalf as a PC.
As for lesser magics and spell casting, that is already in the game. See PP 107-110 in the Core rule book.

Yeah, I'm with those that very much hope they do not ever introduce such a class. I prefer the way they've still got magic, but it's subtle and not so 'on the nose', which very much befits most of the magic of Middle-earth. While I understand it could be fun (for some games, particularly for a one-off) to play such a wizard, I also think it would be really, really tough to balance such a character with other party members (the same problem one can have with Jedi in Star Wars).
I'm a fan of Decipher's game. But in my campaign I had a Noldor Elf magic user that ended up basically throwing fireballs every combat (Flame of Anor, like Gandalf in Moria); he might as well have been using Magic Missile. It honestly didn't feel like Middle-earth to me at that point.

Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Well, it's a bit of a misnomer to state that characters have no access to spellcasting; there are already heroes with access to magic--just not as a profession. And, of course, the Loremaster has access to most of the bigwigs of the Third Age: Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, Elrond, Galadriel (eventually), the Nazgul, Wights, etc.

Considering that this game has no classes, then no.

Gandalf was lucky to get away with flaming pinecones.
Anyways, The Istari...all 5 of them...are angels, on par with the Balrog (Gandalf basically fought one to a mutual kill) and only barely below Sauron (Who's a corrupted angel himself).
While the two Blue Wizards are the weakest of the 5, they're still well beyond PC level...unless, of course, you upscale XP even further beyond the upscaling Dunedain and Rivendell elves get.
