Question: By my estimation, of the pair of mountains that stand out furthest to the west in the Northern Ered Luin, I believe that Mount Rerir should be the more southerly of the two. Of course that would mean that Rerir is somewhat diminished from how it appeared in the First Age. Either that or the mountain was split in the cataclysm that inundated the entire range and both peaks represent the remains. Agree or disagree?
Hmmm. That would seem most likely, since it is closest to Himring. I guess the only other possibility is that the mountain is actually further south and is now the source of the Linduin. But that doesn't fit the description as well.

As said, Rerir is diminished in size. I'm thinking some sort of blast impact zone (maybe I need to add some hills around the mountain) with rubble and then the ancient traces of a now dried up riverbed.

In any case, here's a coloured version, in my increasingly inaccurately named thread:

I'm going to fool around with hex grids and scale next... maybe I'll post a numbered hex grid and let you call out where you want stuff.

Oh, I really like that aesthetic, zed.

I've been playing around with CartoDB.com, and also learning how to do mapping in d3.js. Either/both could be great for finally creating that community annotated map of Middle Earth* I've been dreaming about, and your maps could make for an amazing base layer.

Anybody know if there's GIS data for Middle Earth floating around?

Check out http://www.me-dem.me.uk if you haven't seen it already. Inspirational stuff though not sure it's quite what you're looking for, for working with Zed's mapping.

It doesn't seem like the project is very active, but there is a discussion about getting hold of related GIS data on their forum.

Going to be a while on the hex map; technical difficulties.

I wouldn't worry about the ancient river beds. It's been 6400 years since the defeat of Morgoth; any traces of those old rivers would have disappeared long ago.

The mountain that stands apart in Forlindon, south of the river must be Mount Dolmed, which places Rerir about 140 miles to the north (at about the same latitude as the Isle of Himling--as you point out). It wouldn't have exploded though; I don't think that Rerir (or Dolmed either) would have been volcanic. However, it might have been broken when the sea flooded in.

By the way, once the map of the Blue Mountains is completed, I think that it should be posted to the House Rules forum, don't you?

I was thinking more external forces than internal, but I'm okay leaving things as they are. :)

Will you make a city map of Dale and a city map of Erebor? :)

I'm a big fan of Rich's Dale map. But maybe I would do a map of Erebor, sure.

Well, if you could create tiling background textures of your trees and mountains, that would allow infinite scaling. Even though it wouldn't look as elegant at the transitions.
