Strange that it got so widespread misunderstood. I think the text is pretty clear:
the player may choose to roll a number of Success dice, up
to the number of unspent Experience points currently in
possession of the character
If the roll got a single 6 icon, the hero may now receive
a Precious Object, OR gain a Wondrous Artefact if
he chooses to spend a number of Experience points

equal to...

That's not the part that's confusing, Falenthal. For me at least all that was clear. It was that the player only had to pay the number of XP if he decided to actually take the item or not (I was thinking that once the decision of how many Success Dice were 'spent', the XP was gone for good).
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Yes. My poor confused LM thought the same, hence why I started thread.

Well, the second quote says "the hero may receive object X if he chooses to spend XP". Only when receiving the object must he decide to spend them. The quote about the number of Success dice rolled doesn't say anywhere that those XP have to be spent.

Anyway, glad it's all clear now. Gaining a Magical Treasure is not a gamble anymore... unless your LM plants some cursed items in your campaign's magical index...

The couple of times my players found some Magical Treasure they wanted everything anyway, but yeah, somehow I didn't understand it properly until this thread.

Speaking of which. Artificer gives High Elves an extra die to roll.

Does that mean they can roll 7 dice, or does it mean they roll 6 but only pay 5?

Roll 7, pay 6. (Or roll X, pay X-1, for values up to 7).
