Finding Rivendale with a High Elf
Finding Rivendale with a High Elf
So if an elf from Rivendale is traveling to Rivendale does he still have to search for the entrance like any other character with the same TN and consequences, or is he considered an "appropriate guide" to find the entrance without searching? How have others dealt with this in their games?
Re: Finding Rivendale with a High Elf
I haven't deal with this in my game, but I would allow any Elf from Rivendell the knowledge of how to find it without any trouble.
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).
Re: Finding Rivendale with a High Elf
My thoughts as well, although the rules confused me a bit. The one thing that gave me pause was that in the Hobbit, even Gandalf searched for quite a while before he was able to locate the path, but I suppose it would be much easier for an elf who lived there.
Re: Finding Rivendale with a High Elf
Same: I would always allow an Elf from Rivendell (or, one from Lindon in most cases) to find it without trouble. I'm sure Elrond can guide those he wishes through the barriers.
the only caveat: if they're not welcome. in such a case they're probably in a lot of trouble already...

I suspect Gandalf would have found the path easier if he hadn't had thirteen dwarves in tow. (In other words, the magic of Elrond/Vilya is actively working to keep outsiders out).

Either that, or Gandalf just rolled an Eye on his roll for some reason.
But most people can find their own home.

My home is not guarded by one of the Wise, wielding the power of one of the Three in order to keep his refuge safe from outsiders.Angelalex242 wrote:Either that, or Gandalf just rolled an Eye on his roll for some reason.

Or is it?

Re: Finding Rivendale with a High Elf
Presumably, Elrond has a 'permanent guest list' and the magic only works on people not on it.
Re: Finding Rivendale with a High Elf
The Hobbit was written long before the idea came about that Rivendell was a bastion of light against the Shadow. There, it's just a hidden refuge of elves, because elves are like that.
Furthermore, just because Gandalf knows the way to Rivendell doesn't mean it has to be easy to get to. He knows how to follow the stone-path; it's just hard to find the right stones. The country is dangerous and deceptive, and you have to be careful not to fall into a crevasse.

Re: Finding Rivendale with a High Elf
I could see requiring a travel roll with a lower TN for an elf from Rivendale, especially if they have been away for a while.
