Gandalf Battle Stats
Re: Gandalf Battle Stats
I'm of the opinion that Eru/Valar deliberately nudged things so the fellowship would go into moria. you might think of the balrog being killed as a bit of house-cleaning on their part. it wouldn't do to leave one of the maiar running around with nothing to oppose him.
having Gandalf die and have to be sent back was an unfortunate accident. "Don't worry G! got you fixed up better than new! hope you like the new duds! you weigh a lot less too... you been doing atkins over there?"

Doesn't his feat die have G-rune all around it?

Not being good on my hobbit knowledge but to have an LM wizard with " battle stats" would be a good ideal. Let's say the fellowship wants to get a patron to go with them on a quest. It would be pretty sweet for the group to truly feel like they are in a jrrt world and make them feel like they are doing something that holds some weight.

Re: Gandalf Battle Stats
You could modify the basic Gandalf Stats to represent the 4 other Istari too. Though having Saruman for a pal may end up full of Shadow Points...

Re: Gandalf Battle Stats
Humor aside, I don't think I would ever try to give Gandalf "battle stats". I don't believe it is in the spirit of TOR to stat out allies so that they can roll dice as separate combatants. The archetype for the TOR way is the Hound of Mirkwood: it provides benefit to the hero(es) without rolling its own attack every round. The game is supposed to be about the heroes, not the NPCs.
If an LM wants to spin a tale in which Gandalf participates with the heroes in a battle, wtfpwning bad guys, then that can simply be narrated, while the heroes roll their own dice.

Gandalf doesn't (shouldn't, I guess) go around wtfpwning people. He's usually a bit more subtle than that.

Oh, I agree. I wouldn't use Gandalf that way. But it seems that some folks do want to see him do that (or Glorfindel, or Galadriel, etc.) so I was suggesting a way to accomplish that.
Besides, Gandalf does on occasion wtfpwn.

Re: Gandalf Battle Stats
I have only LM-ed battles with Thranduil and Radagast fighting "alongside" the heroes, and did what I imagine most everyone does: having the PCs "fighting" smaller battles (or using skills to foil attacks, scout positions etc.) and not influencing the outcome of the fight, but making it either a heavy loss or a lighter loss for the Free Peoples and such (saving some people etc.). I'm pretty sure that's the main way TOR would play out when the important and powerful people take part.

Well, Gandalf does fight alongside heroes when he needs to, particularly as Gandalf the White.
Gandalf the Grey does less personal asskicking then does his upgrade, but he's still not afraid to toss some flaming pinecones around, and still personally kills the Goblin King with Glamdring.
