UBCon XXVI: April 17 - 19

Post by Otaku-sempai » Sat Apr 04, 2015 11:20 pm

UBCon XXVI: Heart of the Sea is being held at the University of Buffalo North Campus (Buffalo, NY) on the weekend of April 17. I am not signed to GM anything although my wife might (she hasn't yet decided). I will bring Hobbit Tales with me nonetheless.

It is a fairly small, regional con in the U.S., so it's not surprising that Cubicle 7 does not have any official presence as a sponsor or vendor. However, we do have some TOR forum members in this area. Anyone else planning on being there?

Quick reminder: Buffalo also hosts Queen City Conquest (or QCC) taking place Sep 18 - Sep 20, 2015, at the Buffalo Niagara Convention Center. I may sign up there to run TOR and/or Hobbit Tales.

I see that our Garrett will be running a session of TOR on Friday night! It's too bad that the UBCon website doesn't seem to allow reserving a chair at the game in advance. Tayna & I will have to remember to sign up when we get to the con.

My wife and I have purchased our tickets. Unfortunately, like last year, players cannot pre-register for individual events. I'm not even sure that seats can be reserved upon arriving at the con. Maybe Garrett has some insights on this?

I won't be able to attend, but I'd love to get feedback on how the game goes down. Let me know if you get to play Otaku (or anyone else).

It looks like you can reserve seats now at ubcon.org. Just create a user account, go to the event sched, click on the event you want to sign up for (http://reg.ubcon.org/event/show/14 for my One Ring game) and reserve seats. Actually, I'm doing a late night 10pm game, so I don't think there will be any problem getting in. Even if so, I'll make sure everyone gets to play.

Yeah, about events. I can click on the game but the page has no button or other option to reserve a seat; also, the homepage includes the following disclaimer: "Please note that you cannot preregister for events. As such, all events are first come first serve until they reach capacity."

Weird, having it be a free-for-all. But again, I've never turned a player away.

That's the same way the con ran things last year. Maybe it is due to a problem with the software for the event listings.

So, any plans for Queen City Conquest yet?

Yes, I'm running longer form games. Friday will be a double slot part 1 and 2 of an original Achtung! Cthulhu (WW2 Cthulhu). Saturday is a 2 slot part 1 and 2 of Deadlands Noir. I want to try and tell longer stories and give players more time to roleplay. People don't have to do both slots, but those who do can level up their characters. Also, Saturday night I'm doing another 18 player delve. This time: Deadlands: The Battle for Washington DC.

Good stuff. You guys running anything there?

Game Report:

We started off with Garrett as Loremaster and five player-heroes: Lereth (me), a Ranger of the North; Nimrodel the High-Elf; Torino, a River Hobbit; Gand, a Dwarf of Erebor; and Wulferd the Beorning. Shortly after the session begain we acquired two late-comers: Runa, a woman of Lake-town, and Beli, another Dwarf.

The PCs won most of the contests at the Moon festival and came together quickly after the theft of the Beornings' Sickle of the Moon. Pursuit of the thieves was organized and we were off.

We hoped to catch up with the thieves quickly before they rendezvoused with their compatriots, but that was not in the cards (or dice, rather). After overcoming perils along the way, we found the miscreants without being immediately detected ourselves and we quickly formulated a plan.

Things did not go quite as hoped but we were ultimately victorious; I am happy to report that the Fellowship of the Moon did not incur any fatal casualties. I do feel that I was not at my best; I had some trouble getting into my Ranger's head. Still, I think that everyone had fun. Kudos to Garrett.
