Other Minds magazine, latest Issue published

Post by Tolwen » Mon Apr 20, 2015 4:25 pm

Hi folks,
it has already been mentioned in other threads, but I thought it might be an idea to open a specific thread for it.
Issue 15 of Other Minds has just been published. If you haven't had a look, please feel free to browse to the website (link see my signature) and download it (and perhaps other back Issues).
You can find the following content in it:
  • Editorial
  • The Road Goes Ever On: What's out there in interesting Tolkien and Middle-earth-related RPG stuff.
  • Inside Information: Some info on things that concern the magazine.
  • Middle-earth in miniature: Chapter 1 - Overview and Hobbits: Discussion and presentation of miniatures made for Middle-earth throughout the years.
  • Adapting HARP to Middle-earth for campaigns in the Late Third Age (TA 2945 onwards): Rules for using ICE's HARP in Middle-earth.
  • Settlements of Rhovanion: Companion article to the demographics of Rhovanion in OM14.
  • A Hope Unforeseen – Men of Drúwaith Iaur (Part 2): The second and concluding part of the great adventure begun in OM14.
All the Issues may be downloaded here.

You may also join the Other Minds Facebook group for up-to-date news.

And both the editing team as well as the contributors are eager for questions and feedback ;)

Happy reading!

And there are some very familiar names in the table of contents as well.

It's been a long time since I've looked at HARP, but having options is good. Great job!

One question regarding the settlements in Rhovanion. What is the primary source of all the information. That is an incredible amount of detail and I assume it has been gleaned from various sources and elaborated upon. Very well done and informative though. I just skimmed though it and plan to go back and reread in detail.

The vast majority (almost all) of the names and towns are original (i.e. made up by me or inspired by MERP creations). Unfortunately Tolkien's information on Rhovanion is very sketchy. From the three major regions (Eriador, Rhovanion, Gondor/Rohan), Rhovanion has gotten the least attention by the professor - at least as far as settlement patterns or realms are concerned. IIRC he gave only two mannish settlements a name (Dale and Esgaroth). A small (but unspecified number) is alluded two, but without names.
If you're interested in how the patterns came to be, you should read the demography article in OM14, as it is the base from which the settlements in OM15 arose. That will give you a good overview and feel for the logic behind it (hopefully ;) ).

Am I the only one who goes to the site and can't find issue 15? No announcement, no link.

Very well done. I have been meaning to read the back issues for some time. Thanks for all the great effort.

Here's a more direct link, I think.

Yes, thank you. I modified the link in my original posting so that it now points directly to the download section.

EDIT: I also added the news item for OM15 (including direct download link) on the start page of the OM website.

Cheers
