A simple question on Endurance and being Weary
A simple question on Endurance and being Weary
As I was reading the book in preparation for the upcoming campaign, ran into something (2 things) that made me a bit curious. Would appreciate if you guys could shed some light on this!
So here's the scenario:
1) A dwarf with 32 Endurance and 27 Fatigue (in part due to equipment, partly due to combat).
2) An Orc hits the dwarf with for 6 Fatigue damage.
3) The hit was a Piercing blow, so dwarf rolls his Protection roll (Lets say he has 3d worth of armor)
Question: For the Protection roll, is he counted as Weary (as in, only 4, 5, 6 are counted as Successes) or does the Weary condition apply AFTER this roll? Or am I mixing up mechanics?
Question 2 is a bit simpler. The cultural blessing of the dwarves is to subtract their favored heart score from their equipment load before calculating Fatigue. I am not sure if this refers to the entire Heart score PLUS the 1/2/3 thing or JUST the 1/2/3 thing?
Thanks again!

Re: A simple question on Endurance and being Weary
1) I don't know if there's an official ruling on this, but when this question comes up the consensus seems to be that you (or your adversary, if circumstances are reversed) becomes Weary and then rolls protection.
2) Your favoured attributes are the base scores plus the bonuses.

I would presume sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.
When Axe of Az hits an enemy, the enemy is weary for his protection test.
So it follows that when the enemy wearies a PC, he's weary for his protection test.
And yes, it's Attribute+favored.
Hence, if the dwarf has a heart of 4, and a favored heart of 7 (+3), then he subtracts 7.

Yeah, but thats Axe of Az, which makes enemy Weary as a side-function, I was talking about regular axe, and the regular damage that causes endurance lossAngelalex242 wrote:I would presume sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

Right. It's just that most of use feel that the effect is immediate, since it happens 'when' the hero's fatigue drops equal or below their encumbrance. It is not 'at the start of a round' (like some adversary abilities work), but 'whenKullervo wrote:Yeah, but thats Axe of Az, which makes enemy Weary as a side-function, I was talking about regular axe, and the regular damage that causes endurance lossAngelalex242 wrote:I would presume sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander.

, in my mind 'as soon as'.
Make sense?

But isn't the character defending himself simultaneous to the attack? I mean, mechanically we divide the action into two separate rolls, but the character would be defending himself against the incoming blow with whatever endurance he has prior to receiving the hit. In my mind it doesn't make sense to penalize the character for that hit (any further attacks that round, yes).

Re: A simple question on Endurance and being Weary
The explanation I've heard (and agree with) is that the Endurance damage (or the Axe of Az effect) is part of the attack roll, which clearly precedes the Protection roll.

Re: A simple question on Endurance and being Weary
This example is why we advise new players to have at least 10 puts ''extra' of Endurance compared to starting Fatigue, otherwise their character might be made Weary with only one successful hit, and unless said character is heavily armoured (4d or more) they are likely to fail a Protection Test - and being Wounded Really Sucks!
