Trying to Promote
Re: Trying to Promote
I'll play with Walfred, I love an adventurous hobbit!
Re: Trying to Promote
Okay, here's Walfred Took. Please feel free to change.
Encounters (TOR p. 187 has a useful summary chart):
Hobbits tend to shine at social activities, and Walfred is no exception. Our intrepid Took has high Courtesy and Riddle (extremely useful for both the Introduction phase and the Interaction phase of Encounters—since PCs usually need to properly introduce themselves in order to be allowed to speak later in the Encounter), as well as decent Persuade (favoured) and Song all of which will help the PCs gain assistance and information they need. Riddle is especially good if you don’t know whether to trust an NPC and need to ferret out information without revealing too much. While Walfred has a zero in Lore, he does have Shadow-Lore as a Specialty, which could be used for an auto-success in certain circumstances or to allow him a chance to make a roll (check with the LM). Once his Courtesy or Riddle has paved the way, his Story-telling Specialty will be extremely valuable, especially if there’s an NPC who needs softening up or a reason to trust him.
Journeys:
Walfred's combination of a moderate Awareness skill and the Keen-Eyed Trait means you should probably be one of the Look-Outs for the company--look out for chances for Walfred to invoke Keen-Eyed to create opportunity for the company. You could potentially be the Guide with a moderate Travel skill, but others are better suited.
Combat:
With the Small-Folk Virtue and his experience as a Bounder in the Shire, Walfred should be in Open stance as much as possible to take advantage of his high Parry (note it only applies if his enemy is bigger than him—so usually but not always). His Song skill could be used to great effect in Rally Comrades (also Open stance) to help all the heroes recover Endurance during battle (not to be underestimated!).
Other:
Your outstanding skill is Stealth—you should look for opportunities to use it, like sneaking around to gather information or spy on an enemy camp, see what all the fuss is about, etc. It will be particularly effective combined with your Keen-Eyed Trait. His Persuade and Search are both decent too, which will help if you encounter NPCs who might not favour the company, or to solve mysteries encountered. His Reckless Trait could make for some fun times in both Social and Combat areas—or if he meets any rowdy bulls. Smoking could be a good way to smooth social situations or get someone to talk to him and his companions who is otherwise not so inclined.
[[Edited to change one of his traits to Keen-Eyed instead of Elusive, since Zed might do that on the character sheet. Also, grammar.]]

Re: Trying to Promote
Here's Walfred, with a little bit of stuff I added:

I know that's a bit much, and maybe folks won't read it... what do y'all think?

Re: Trying to Promote
I think you could cut my aside about how Encounters work, since presumably the LM will duplicate that verbally for the players. Also maybe tighten up Other (my list of possible uses parrots to some extent what's above).
But I have no regrets about the terrible pun in Journeys.

Re: Trying to Promote
My instinct is to whittle down these guides to just specific advice; new players are already going to have a lot to think about; too much prose will reduce comprehension. My draft for Egil is still too wordy, I think.

Alright, here's an edited version of Walfred and a new write-up for Radegund:Glorelendil wrote:My instinct is to whittle down these guides to just specific advice; new players are already going to have a lot to think about; too much prose will reduce comprehension. I elected not to go with scores for the skills... these will be on the back of the character sheets and I think they might work best as general advice. We certainly don't want players flipping their character sheets over and over, maybe just once.
What do folks think about these two? Still too wordy?

Re: Trying to Promote
The one for Radegund is perfectly well, in my opinion.
Walfred is still a bit too long, with explanations of various skills that aren't necessary.

Okay. Here's a PDF of the pregens, with commentary. I've made a few changes to the characters, as discussed in this thread and the other one.
Please let me know what y'all think, I'd like to wrap this up by tomorrow, if possible. (Trying to get some stuff in the mail...

Re: Trying to Promote
There's no suggested combat stance for Biarnor (unlike everyone else), and Walfred and Radegund use "he/she" while the others use "you".zedturtle wrote:Okay. Here's a PDF of the pregens, with commentary. I've made a few changes to the characters, as discussed in this thread and the other one.

Re: Trying to Promote
Thanks! I will fix... do you think the 'you' is better than the third person approach?Rue wrote:There's no suggested combat stance for Biarnor (unlike everyone else), and Walfred and Radegund use "he/she" while the others use "you".zedturtle wrote:Okay.
