Wild Hobbits of the Vales of Anduin & Cultural Rewards

Post by Trotter » Sun May 31, 2015 4:37 am

Hello!

I am working on a character creation document using the random character creation I posted on the old forums and was wondering if there were any Cultural Rewards for the Wild Hobbits of the Vales of Anduin. I do not think there are, but does that limit them to the Qualities available to all Cultures? Or, could they receive a reward from another culture in gratitude? As someone partial to hobbits I'd love to see this culture more fleshed out, but from the way they were presented they seem to be something of a footnote, perhaps not to be played. This is really the only thing missing.

Thanks, and happy Sunday.
Stephen

I'd just use the rewards for the Shire and modify the story of them. For example, a king's blade could be a dagger found in the Gladden Fields and a remnant of the host of Isildur.

Using Ultimate Fantasy Grounds - that means anyone can play.

The description for wild hobbits in Heart of the Wild says "while all Cultural Virtues of the Shire-folk are normally available to wild Hobbits, their Cultural Rewards are not." Nor does HotW indicate they can acquire the rewards of other cultures. I think denying wild hobbits cultural rewards was purposeful on the part of the authors. While cultural rewards are defined in the rule book as "pieces of war gear of superior craftsmanship, granted to a player-hero as an award for his deeds," Wild Hobbits have survived by stealth and wits, not fighting. "In the Gladden Fields, a brave Hobbit is usually a dead Hobbit," to quote HotW. That combined with impression that they are a nomadic or semi-nomadic people makes it unlikely that their culture would have developed the ability or the inclination to develop cultural rewards. The implications of not having cultural rewards is limiting in one sense but working within that limitation may help the player to flesh out the culture more and does open up the possibility for some interesting role playing situations.

I knew they were discussed previously here somewhere, but it took a while to find the link: viewtopic.php?f=7&t=3350

Thank you for the replies!

I think what I will do, since I want this document to be strictly RAW, is footnote the document by Arthadan on Wild Hobbits. That way the option will be there for any players who want more than qualities available for valorous Wild Hobbits.

Thanks again!
