Seeking knowledge in Rivendell about the Werewolf

Post by Corvo » Wed Jul 01, 2015 8:34 am

DoM campaign, year 2955. SPOILER AHEAD!

The Fellowship is reaching Rivendell in the aftermath of Nightmares of Angmar.
Here they are bound to ask the Wisest among the Wise, Elrond, about a terrible mistery: in '53 the Werewolf was killed by Orophal, yet the beast returned.
How is it possible?
How can the beast be defeated?

In other words, it's a sort of Researching Lore in the House of Elrond fellowship phase undertaking.
What informations can I give to my players?

That depends on how well they roll, I guess! But Elrond might be exactly the sort of person to tell them:
  • this is no ordinary creature, but a spirit bound to a mortal form
  • to truly defeat it they must destroy the spirit.
  • sadly, only the light of the Valinor is said to be able to do such a thing...
  • about that lamp in Woodmen-town (although does even Elrond not know of it...?)

In addition, Elrond might direct the PCs to Radagast and Thranduil as sources of knowledge that might know something more about the Werewolf or that, at least, would worry about it. Thranduil doesn't know nothing about the Lamp of Balthi, but Radagast does.
Also Gandalf knows about the Lamp, of course (it was him that found it in the pits of Dol Guldur!). He might be in Rivendell, or with Thranduil or Radagast by the time the PCs consult with them.

If they manage to get the piece of information from Elrond that tells them that the Light of Valinor can destroy the spirit, and link it with what Radagast or Gandalf know about the Lamp of Balthi, maybe they'll get the solution.

If you want to make the research a little longer, perhaps the Istar suspect (but do not know) that the light from the Lamp might be special. But to confirm it, the heores have to gain audience with the Lampmaker and allow him to inspect the Lamp... and that requires convincing Thranduil of it. What will happen when the Elven-king learns of its existence? Or will the PCs try to lie about their motives?

Did your group play through "The Beast of the Forest" from DoM, Corvo?

My group (our next session will be in 2955, so time-wise we're about the same as you) fought against the Werewolf when he reappared (after Orophal slayed it). They ended up consuling Loremasters and doing research with the Woodmen.

Personally, I'd make it that Elrond knows little about the Lamp, as it's impled that Gandalf kept things (intentionally) quite secret from the Elves. Could provide lots of fun role-playing moments, if the PCs do what Falenthal suggests and seek out Thranduil.
Tale of Years for a second, lower-level group (in the same campaign).

Andrew, Falenthal, Majestic, thank you for your suggestions, and sorry for my long silence: I went in vacation in the Land of Slow Connections, then a slew of nuisances kept me from TOR.

Back to the topic, my situation was pretty much the one described my Majestic: the Companions fought the Werewolf in '53. They searched for informations, but, like Thranduil, they are unaware of the Lamp of Balthi, and Radagast and Gandalf are keeping quiet about it.

Some of the informations Andrew suggested were already discovered in '53, so I had to provide something more for Elrond to reveal.
So I went for my pet “heretical” idea, ie that the Werewolf is apparently immortal because his life essence is tied to some item of great power: and the only items of such power at Sauron's disposal, Elrond reasoned, are the Seven Rings of the Dwarves.

The Companions were sufficiently impressed, about Elrond and about the Werewolf, and that is what I needed :p
